Custom Shower Basin

Hey all, so we've priced out a stainless/aluminum shower base , as we are building it next tot he wheel well, standard basin won't fit. So alternatives to stainless (expensive!) what are your thoughts on plywood box, with fiberglass tape around joints with epoxy/resin, then two part epoxy paint, ( my thinking is this nay be too rigid for vibration of road-
or second thought, plywood box with shower rubber mat ( not sure of tech term) and then rubberized grout and smaller tiles....

Any thoughts much appreciated !

Hey I’m with you. My plan is to build a plywood shower pan with a curb and continuing into the rest of the bathroom which is about four more feet. It will be in two pieces with the outer side of the curb as the breaking point. As practice, I made an AC condensate pan with 3/4” bottom and 1/4” sides and a built in drain plug. I’m using System 3 epoxy resin. The guy I bought it from uses it in his woodworking projects. He said I did not need cloth, just the resin. We’ll see. My thoughts were to epoxy the pan assembly, then use a pigmented gel coat for the finish. There is also an abrasive that can be used for slip resistance. I’ll post on our thread if it’s successful. Utility sink for basin. Cheap at big box stores and even cheaper at salvage places. Just make sure you brace it well underneath.

Check into the Schluter waterproof fabric at any big box store. I have used it on 2 showers in home renovations and really like it. You would use thinset to attach it to the plywood with the approved installation method. This will create a waterproof seal. You then cover it with tile or fiberglass etc.
