What is the batting for...? Maybe so the upholstery will slip over the foam when putting it on? ( I'm not a sower, at least when it comes to foam)

The batting actually makes it harder to slip the cushion on! Sometimes I'll slide the whole thing inti a plastic bag and tear it out later to make it easier. You want a tight fitting cover.

The batting softens the edges and makes it look better, more professional, some people will also cover the batting with a layer of muslin, especially if the fabric is loosely woven, as the batting can poke up little feelers thru the fabric and show up on the right side.

The shop that did our new cushions used a plastic bag over all the foam, batten, etc. They then used a strong vac to suck as much air out as possible which collapses the foam. This makes it much easier to slip on the fabric. They then ripped out the plastic.
