All Hail the 63 FC
Well, the Flying Cloud is home after a relatively uneventful trip from LA Friday. More details on that at my blog :
http://my63flyingcloud.blogspot.com/
Had two quick questions for the group here.
1. What is that ugly square thing on top. I'm guessing an evap cooler, but is that an Airstream thing or an aftermarket PO thing?
2. The interior shell seems to be in excellent shape (except for dirt). Being relatively lazy, is it advisable to take it apart anyway and put in new insulation and rewire, or would most of you let sleeping dogs lie.
Here's a couple of pics. Having trouble uploading the others. Thanks for the advice. Sure more questions are to come.

Dave, Glad to hear that you had a safe trip home. Wow, another classic in the valley! I read your blog, going down the road, crap flying off the trailer, what a hoot! The box on top looks like an evap to me. I am not sure if Airstram offered it as an option, I would think it was added some where along the way. I think the brake issue would be the first issue to correct. I look forward to future posts and pictures.

Need mor pictures
Nice find and sucking in your gut while sliding between two rigs is good for the soul!
I'm working on a 56 Caravanner, which is a close cousin to the FC. I'd love to see the floor plan of yours. I've started a blog my56caravanner.blogspot.com. Just got it ready to haul it to GSM for some work over the winter.
Hope to see more. I'll link my blog to yours.

hey Flycaster and Muddy,
Well the day has been spent in a destructive mode. I'm pretty good at that. Got the two beds up front out, they had been chewed pretty badly. Also the stove, sink and those cabinets and the closet and bathroom doors. I'm starting to see what I've got now.
I'll say one thing, those airstream guys really made a sturdy cabinet. I'm debating whether to take the closets and cabinets by the fridge out. I guess it depends on whether I decide to take all the interior panels out or not.
It's been a productive weekend. Now I can go back to work and rest. Can't wait to read your blog Muddy.

Glad to hear you made it home safely Dave. Yup, the first trip to get it home is always a white knuckle ride. I have fond memories of mine in 2001. As you pull things out of your '63, hold on to them. You never know until its assembly time what's going back in. Do you plan on keeping it as original as possible? I for one would like to see interior pictures if you've got any.

Nice find!
I'd like to see more pics!
Muddyhollow - I read your blog. Just a hint, if you haven't left already, I'd get a shop to put in a new stud. Traveling with one lug off is asking for the wheel to come off. Not fun!
Good luck!

Dave I tried to view your attachments, and got this message:

It's not good when I get that message, it usually means there is no hope for the file.

Flyfshr,
thanks for the advice. I plan on holding onto somethings, but others were chewed up past the point of no return. Stove seems to be in good shape, but will probably need to clean all the whatchamallits. Fridge is there, but not sure if it works. Bathroom is actually in pretty good shape.

I'm taking your advice and started the replacement process this morning. What an easy job to replace these things. I took the wheel off at 6:30AM, down to Car Quest at 8:00AM and pounding in replacements at 8:30AM. I'll have it back together later tonight.
I'll have to carry a couple for good measure!
Thanks for the kick in the pants...
Doug

Whew!
Didn't want to give Collin any extra skin business there!
I had read how Rich lost one lugnut, and the wheel came off. I'm glad you replaced your stud.
Update us as you get pics from the (GSM) beauty center!
DMaiden - WOW - that's some diamond in the rough you have there! I can't wait to see the transformation!

Diamond in the rough? Or lump of coal?
The back picture makes it look worse than it actually is. I have high hopes. Well, medium hopes.

I wish I had my young neice who knows about here to explain this expressly on electronic media than I do:
I am glad you got it home.
