Airstream Safari (1978) - Newbie Post

Hi, is there a sub-forum for specific Airstream owners like Safari?

I had just purchased a 1978 Safari 23' as a project. So, I have lots to learn to save me time, money, and doing it right!

Where can ai find an owner's manual?

Where I can I purchase replacement tinted plexiglass to replace the front shield?

Anyone know how much that'll cost?

Thank you!

Out of doors mart has those rock guards ("front shield") in stock. Unfortunately they are about $400.00 That being said I feel they are a must have to protect the front glass.

I've found that Inland RV has a lot of parts including windows for these models

Welcome!

Nice looking Safari! You can find almost any Air Forum thread for your particular interest or question. For Safari owners including your vintage try http://www.airforums.com/forums/f421/ If that link doesn't click, just go to the Model Specific Section, click on Trailers and then find the Safari group that included your year.

Keywest: I bought a manual from Jackson center a few years ago for my 1978 it shows how to Take everything apart right to the frame. Good luck. Nice looking AS.

Yikes!

I just need the replacement plexiglass and not the entire shield.

Welcome from another '70s Safari owner!
Great trailer!
Ours has a window in the door like your trailer does, I haven't seen another safari with that window. Can you tell if it is original? My window looks to have been added later, I can tell from the rivets.

I've had most of my Safari apart so feel free to ask any questions, I've probably been there.

Also, I replaced the plexiglass in my window guard with a piece of lexan from a plastic supplier I found in the phone book. Cost $150 and an evening in the garage.

Better to replace the guard than one of those windows

Thanks!

The window looks to be an original.

How long was your remodel process, or are you still in the thick of things?

Do you have a photo gallery posted with a link of your project?

My trailer will never be done, always room for improvement, everything is functional but I still have some work I want to do. We've had it for 5 years and do something every year. This year was new water heater and added a spare tire carrier.

Most of my pics are in my photobucket account or on my other posts but I haven't done a good job of organizing my pics in one place.

I realize that all these posts are from 2016, but I wanted to share what I have found so far:
As someone mentioned, go to Airstream.com/owners/manuals and type in the year of your camper. That will give you a basic Owners Manual. I only printed out the pages that applied to my particular Safari to put in a notebook.
I was able to buy a 1978 Factory Service Manual on ebay. It has diagrams, part no. for everything on my Safari. It wasn't cheap, but now that I have it in hand, its well worth it.
I cruise all the Airstream vintage parts online catalogs just getting to know the names of parts and current cost.
And of course I look at AirForum looking for answers.
Some times I look at YouTube, but it usely makes me mad. Few people can afford the remodels that some people do or attempt.
When it comes down to it, YOUR improvements and hunts for parts are really for your enjoyment.
