1964 GlobeTrotter redo
This is my first post here. Found this forum while looking and searching about Airstreams.
I think most of you would call this an UNconventional redo. It's Gawdy (I know it)...and I'm likin it...and it's been a blast so far. I'm gonna post pics of what's happened so far.
The day we brought the Armadillo home LOL
As is was....
Hubby checkin to see what exactly was goin on with the toilet...it was mounted on...get this....a deer mount board???? No idea why.
Tore out the old tile flooring...
This was all there was of what I'm assuming is what ya'll have been calling a gaucho. no mattress or anything...and we want a booth anyway.
Gaucho removed...and walls painted with KILZ. (It had mold...I washed the walls down with bleach water....but couldn't get all of it off.
A/C removed....vent covers removed.....and KILZ on the ceiling.
Couch removed...KILZ there as well.
Now...for some color~!
Painted the ceiling trying to make it look like copper tin tiles.....
First attempt on the curved front wall....looked like Christmas decorations..had to paint over it...and go again with something different. Much better!
Where the four sections join....(I know.....I told ya...it's gettin gawdy)
Couldn't leave it at that...I had to add more.....yeap..leopard spots. But most of those will be covered by the booth and table...so it won't look like so much of it when I'm finished.
.
Meanwhile during all my painting.....hubby and I discovered that we might as well take all the cabinets out and redo them. The fronts are ok...so we can put those back to look original....but all the structural underneath is shot. Not a biggie....but shoulda just gutted the thing first I guess. But...live and learn...It'll all work out.

I think you have a 1966 20 foot Airstream, since it has curved windows.
Post the serial number for a positive ID.

Very creative!
To each their own...if you like it, that's great! Can't wait to see how it all comes together in the end...
I agree though, it's not a 1964...it's a '66-'68. The window style & cabinets confirm it's not a '64...

Talk About a Redo!!
JerseyLilly, nice job. Hey, I told my wife I would do anything she wanted me to do (she's the decorator, I'm just the mechanical guy). Ours is personalized, too and we love it. Enjoy our pictures (before and after) and your creation when you finish. You won't be sorry!

Looks great!
I am really enjoying all these renovation threads. Already a big a fan of Ag71's rig, and soon to be fan of yours ... I can't wait to see upcoming posts of the draperies and fabrics to compliment your already interesting design. Sigh, wishing there was more to do with our '99 ... but the juices are flowing for next season ...

Ok....this is really weird. I got allll and I do mean ALL the paper work with it. Hadn't really gone thru any of it...other than looked at the title. The title says 1964. Then read the first post saying it wasn't a 64. I wonder where along the way that got Changed? hmmm. I even have the thing like comes in a new car window....with all the prices of add ons etc. But it doesn't have a year model on it. A whole bunch the registration papers thru the previous owners and such are in the folder....they all say 1964. Gonna do somemore research on this and find out if it's newer than we thought.
Thanks for all your replies....
Ag 71 your trailer is awesome!!!!! Thanks for sharing the photos.

Serial number ??
The curved windows on the side of your Airstream, were only used in 1966, 1967 and 1968.
Also, the bullet lights in your coach were not used in 1964.

Ok I found this....
1967 and 1968
* 1st digit; I=International or L=Landyacht
* 2nd & 3rd digit; Trailer length
* 4th digit; Model year, 7=1967, 8=1968
* 5th digit; Factory location, S=CA., J=OH
* 6-8 digit; Sequence number
But my serial number starts with an O not and "I or L"
20 means it's a 20 ft'r
8 indicates 1968 on mine.
So what's the O mean? anyone know? And....going thru the folder of stuff once again. After finding everything indicating 1964......except the owners manual...it says 1968.

Not to add to any confusion, but back then, the "O" stood for Overlander.
They were all Overlanders or Internationals.
Then, later on, the Overlander meant a 26 or 27 foot Airstream, depending on the year.
That comes from the old Airstream books.

That serial number breakdown, was way after the early 60 models, and really does not describe the one in question.
Airstream has changed their serial number system several times, in the past.
The present one that is being used, started in the early 80's.
Therefore you must use the breakdown for the correct year.
We have not all, but many of those records.

O208-S542 I know that the S indicates it was made in California. and the following numbers are I assume it's number off the assembly line.
It has the plate by the door that says GlobeTrotter Landyacht.
So...O indictes Overlander 20 indicates length and 8 indicates year model 68. Still no idea how all these papers got the year 1964 on them. At some point...someone must have typo'd and no one ever caught it?

If you look at the third picture down in the first post you will see the distinctive control panel that was unique to the 1968 year models. IMO, it's a 68GT.

It's best to have the title corrected as soon as possible, so that it reflects the proper information for you.
You would need that info, in case the coach was ever stolen.

No telling what all that would entail...ugh! But we haven't registered it yet....I wouldn't know how to go about getting all that changed. But I'm sure the ladies at the court house will know.

You know today, many many things can be done with paper work.
Some legal, and some not.
Wonder if you can go to the County Courthouse and change your date of birth?
Hey, you never know.
Your body, would love it.

Well, to each his own. I'm making my Airstream "mine" too... That's where it's at!
Clearly, you are familiar with the highly recognized Artist Antoni Gaudí, or "Gawdy", as he has become English slang for us...
By the photos, I was going to bet on early 1968. My 68GT was built in Ohio cSep. 1967, and I'm so surprised that Airstream could co-ordinate such similar looking trailers from different locations. Curious, was all the factory construction debris swept under your bathtub too?? I've been wondering if that's just an Ohio procedure.
Anyway, Isn't it fun making it "yours"
