If you'd like to bring some eye-opening historical life to your travels in the area, get yourself a copy of Hampton Sides' -Blood And Thunder-. When you finish, you will feel the need to return to places like Canyon de Chelley. As for the much earlier period, when the Ancestral Pueblans were about, do read Charles Mann's -1491- . (The Ancestral Pueblans had left the four corners area by 1300ad, before the Dine and others moved in.)

Never miss the Spider Woman Rock view in the canyon. I used to go up there often. Don't leave anything in a locked vehicle. The whole rez is depressed and desperate. 60% - 80% unemployment. Also you can walk down to White House on the trail the Dine use. It's quite steep switchbacks. I used to sit on a tree and watch the tourists come down in the big wheel tour vehicles. Spooked the Dine guides. Ha. Best map of the Southwest is called Indian Country although some of the roads we built are not on it.

Great info that brought back many memories of my travels in the area. For another perspective I recommend Empire of the Summer Moon
