I have brought trailers from non-texas states into texas and texas to texas. For non-texas states, the DMV wants a certificate that a texas inspection station verified the VIN. That is all that they need prior to issuing a title (even if you have a title from the other state). I don't know the purpose, but that is the policy. This policy is true for cars as well as trailers.

The important thing here being that the VIN confirmation paperwork must be completed by a Texas approved inspection station on a Texas form, and Texas will not accept forms from other states. This makes sense because you pay Texas Sales and Use Tax on the transaction, so the property is supposed to have been sold or used here

Jeeze....don't stir the water!
I guess I have been lucky. I re-read the regs last night....I have been escaping the tangled mess you all are discussing. I hope my place does not become embroiled in the mess. All the paperwork you have mentioned is, in fact, mentioned. Lets keep this low key.

Vin
Just recently bought a used AS from out of state and here in CO they require a physical VIN inspection on the unit before you can register it.

I guess you never tried calling a Texas DMV. You would be about as likely
to speak to the President of the US. Of course, if one enjoys hearing a
busy tone 24/7? Anyway, that is been my experience in Dallas County and surrounding counties. Oh, if you want to stand in a long line just to speak to someone, allow several hours just to get a run around answer.

Once, in Travis County, I couldn't even get in line. A police officer was turning people away because the line was to the door, and they didn't want people waiting outside in the heat because there's nothing worse than having to deal with hot, bored customers. :P
Actually, the officer said, "look, people have been getting heat stroke, it's 110F, here's a map to a less busy office." Fair enough.

And, of course,.....my favorite....
I have a ranch in Hidalgo County, Texas. I don't want to even get a little bit political here....BUT, you have to speak Spanish when you go into the County office there. I moved to Cooke County, Texas where I have to speak Oklahoman at the County Office. There is a difference.

Since I'm leaving my baby in Washington, their DVM said no problem with getting plates. At lease now I don't have to worry about the political B.S. in Texas for awhile.

Heh, hope I didn't sound too testy in my responses. Too many trips to the DMV I guess.
Yes, you are indeed lucky, but I won't tell anyone about your secret operations you're running up there.
Maybe next one I buy, I'll let you import for me and save some time and trouble. You could probably make a good side business out of this!

I just registered my AS which was purchased in Michigan. Texas required both an inspection and weight certificate in order to title.

Ours was bought in Texas...and even though we are currently in Oklahoma, we still make a thirty mile trip south to Vernon and have it re -instated there so it remains registered in Texas with Texas plates etc.

Inspection was not required to get Texas title! Inspection is required to license for public roads.
