Great2beadaw and Adamloom:

The Escapees organization has a subgroup called Xcapers for younger fulltimers who are working on the road. The Escapees organization was founded by fulltimers for fulltimers. It has a free forum.

@adamloom and @great2beadaw, very excited to see that you’re sequentially each a few months ahead of our timeline. We’re in the process of renovating a 1979 31’ Sovereign AND prepping the house for sale so that we can we can hit the road in a full-time capacity no later than September. Mid-30s couple with a 3 year old, so we might have slightly different logistics than some, but eager to start our nomadic mid-life-crises all the same! Would love to keep in touch with those just embarking, as well as those who have done it for a while. LOTS to still figure out, prove out, and simply experience in the months and years ahead (planning on 2 years as an initial full-time target). Please PM if you’re looking to connect, and we’ll see everyone out in the wild soon enough!

We researched for a couple of years, pretty much starting with a blank sheet of paper and going from there. Asked lots of questions, the answers to which usually led us to more questions. Eventually we got things figured out.

We started out taking things with us that we decided later we didn't need. Of course, we sold some things that we later DID need. Overall, the past five years have gone very quickly. We've been reducing the stuff as we go, but I fear that the weight of what goes away just comes back around my middle, so that we aren't really any lighter on the road.

Watch the weight. You will learn how to load to keep things balanced, and you will be tempted to fill the truck bed with all sorts of stuff. ALL of it adds up, and it can be very easy to overload the rear axle. If you don't already have a truck, don't believe the sales people who tell you an F250 or 2500 can tow anything. Yes, they may be able to drag it down the road a bit, but then Wally Byam towed an Airstream with a bicycle, and Oldsmobile advertised their new Toronado by removing the rear wheels and towing an Airstream. Possible? Yes. Safe? NO.
