Full-Timers' Ladder Recommendation

I'm looking for a ladder to get up to the roof for service, and something that possibly collapses. I currently just own a traditional Weber 6ft ladder, which isn't going to cut it.

I thought I'd ask what everyone else keeps handy who full times. There are a lot of options out there, but some of the reviews on certain types, about collapsing while on the ladder, is not encouraging.

Any help is appericated.

I just ordered a telescoping ladder that goes to 12.5'. I just got it yesterday so have not yet tried it out. It's heavier than it looks but compact enough to take along and will certainly reach to the roof for access. Google it and you'll see what's out there. I first ordered a larger ( & heavier) one from Walmart but when it arrived it was WAY too bulky and heavy. I don't know why I didn't see that coming. But they even shipped it back for free so that was nice. If you look around you'll see what's out there so you can choose what's best for you. Beware of the weight limits some of the cheaper ones have. They wouldn't have worked for me either.

Now for the details......

I have been using Little Giant folding extension ladders for years. Finally got a Telesteps model and find that they are perfect for light duty use and are light enough and of a compact size for RV use.

I have the heavy duty model, but the standard unit will suit most occasion uses.

The one caution is leaning the top against the sidewall, especially the delicate Airstream aluminum. I have solved this problem by making a multi-density foam cap that sits on the top of the ladder and distributes the weight so no marks or indents are made by the leaning ladder.

I have been using this system for 6 months and am very pleased with it. PM me if you would like more specific information.

Hi Lew
I like you recommendation on the ladder will look at getting one. Would it be possible to post a picture of foam bumper you designed to spread the weight out as it leans on the airstream wall? If possible both a closer shot of it on the ladder and then a shot of how it works when against a trailer

As a side note, I have never used a ladder on my airstream and the thought scares the crap out of me. So snug put into this bumper system would be great as I don't want to put a crease or dint in anything

We bought a similar one, 12.5' XtendAndClimb from Ace, but have not yet put it into service ... I was going to make some sort of PVC pipe "bumper" with a foam covering this winter.

Here's an off-the-wall idea for padding the ladder rails— felt blackboard erasers! Available on Amazon in 6-inch (http://www.amazon.com/Quartet-807628...ckboard+eraser) and 12-inch (Amazon.com : Quartet 807222 Deluxe laminated felt chalkboard eraser/cleaner, 12 x 2 x 1-5/8 : Wood Lead Pencils : Office Products) lengths. The links are the ones that I've bought.

If you get this model, remove the white chamois cover on the back. Put Velcro on the ladder rails and the backs of the erasers. Then just stick the erasers on when you need them, take them off when you don't. (put the hooks on the erasers, the loops on the ladder, because the loops provide a little padding all on their own).

When you're not using them on your ladder, keep one 6" eraser in your tow vehicle's glove box. They're also great for wiping condensation off the inside of your car windows.

Great suggestions everyone. Also, good idea's Protagonist. Another idea I've used in the past for padding, is go into any Dollar General or Walmart and look for the foam swimming pool noodles. All you need is a razor blade to cut them in half and they work great and are usually large and cheap.

I'm going to be purchasing one of these ladders next week. I just ordered two new vents for the head and the shower area that I'll be installing, along with a seal kit from Airstream. So time to get up on the ol' roof.

So far I've just been able to peak at with my 6ft ladder.

I ended up buying a 12.5ft ladder from Best Choice Products on Amazon.

Already started using it, this has been a great investment for our future travels. Just wish it had come with a case. But 105 reviews and 4 1/2 stars.
