If I only use city water and plan to winterize with air only, is it necessary to disconnect the pump and drain water from the pump?

If there is water in the pump and it freezes, you will be buying a new pump!! If you are blowing the lines out, run the pump for a couple of minutes while applying air to blow it out as well. Best is to give it a bit of anti-freeze!! If you have a strainer between the water tank and pump make sure ther is no water in it either.

I would agree. When I blew my system out there was still a pool of water in the filter when I took it off. I took a rag and dabbed it up.

Also in my manual it says to take the hose off the end going out of the pump and run the pump briefly to drain out the water. If you blow it out well there won’t be much left. But it is easy for the pump to retain water and freeze.

Also you must be very careful to get out all the water in the toilet lines. This takes a while. I had to shut off the toilet briefly while under pressure and flush about 10 times before no more water was coming out. Should that water remain it will most definitely freeze.

This is why I put in antifreeze. I blow out the system, but just feel more secure with antifreeze there. Better to not take chances than to have a mess in the Spring. Some suggest to blow out the antifreeze as well when you are done putting it through.

I would suggest getting a bypass installed (which you may already have since you have a 2020) so that you can pump antifreeze through the system. It is easy. Doesn’t take long and come Spring it really takes no time to clean it out.

This whole winterizing gets easier the next year.

Also don’t forget the outside shower. Often overlooked.

Will water get in the pump if I only use city water may be a better question. As part of the dealer prep the water tank was filled. I have since drained the tank, and pump, The hose to the pump is vey difficult to access and I am hoping ito avoid that part of the process.

Will it? Who knows. Can it? most certainly. The back flow prevention "stuff" can indeed leak a bit. Any amount of leak will put water in the pump and strainer area.

I have a 25 FB and blow out the lines. I live up north where we get down to the single digits most winters. Here is what I have been doing for 10 years now, without any problems with my water pump.


I blow air through all the lines. I run the pump dry and blow the lines out again. There might be a little water in the pump but it hasn't caused me any trouble yet. But who knows, the tenth time might get me!


Running the pink stuff through is most likely the best way. Taking your pump out would be better. In my trailer it is almost impossible to see or reach the water pump so I just do as our local Airstream dealer recommends, blow the lines.

Disconnect the lines from the pump (they should only be hand tight), drain the strainer, run the pump for 10 seconds, mop up a little water with a towel, and you're done. Not worth a second thought!
