Travel to Victoria BC in April

My Interstate is winterized, including the fresh water tank. Should I leave the black and gray tanks as is, and only unwinterize the fresh water tank? What about the water heater? I could unwinterize everything and run the heater. I will be traveling for two weeks. This is my first big trip in a colder climate. I am not sure of the best way to deal with this.

Don't know about the roads between you and Victoria, but I'd be quite surprised if you got seriously freezing weather in Victoria BC in April. The weather there is quite similar to Seattle (and vice-versa, of course), so you should be fine while you're there.

Okay, granted you all know us by the moniker "The Great White North"; but seriously! freezing weather in Victoria in April in an El Nino year? You'd have a better chance of having snow in Texas.

Just take some wet weather gear and enjoy Goldstream Provincial Park and the drive up and down the Malahat, remembering to stop at the summit at the look out.

Cheers
Tony

We didn't even get snow this year. Not sure what you're expecting.

As noted by some of my neighbors, no worries about freezing once you get west of the Cascades or Siskiyous in California, Oregon, and Washington.

What's your planned route to get there?

Thanks! i would love to camp at some National parks or something other than private parks near Vancouver. I am so looking forward to seeing this part of the world. Do you have any suggestions for Vancouver BC?

I am going through Colorado, Utah, Oregon, and Washinton.
I will end up in Vancouver BC, then head home. One day, when I have more time, I would like to drive across Canada.
Thanks for your help.
What would we do without the air forums?

Expect some cold, hard politics in our provincial capital in April - not cold weather.

The Vancouver/Victoria weather forecast this week is clear and sunny with temps. averaging 16C (60.8F).

Victoria or Vancouver?

If it's Victoria, you could avoid all mountain passes except the Siskiyous at the California/Oregon border by taking I-10 to I-5, then north to Olympia, WA. From there travel up Hood Canal on 101 to Port Angeles Wa. Ferry from there to Victoria.

Be wary of potential snowstorms in CO in April.

Porteau Cove Provincial Park north of Vancouver is nice. Fort Langley is another option; neither are really convenient to the city of Vancouver. The setting at Porteau Cove is spectacular but the 7 AM train that passes right by will sure give you a wake-up call (at least it did a few years ago when we were there).

Derby Reach has a much nicer setting for camping than Ft Langley and there is a great trail to bike on which will take you to the village of Ft Langley for the best of both worlds.
Sooke to the west of Victoria has a nice Provincial Park.
Pick up a provincial park guide for BC. There are some beautiful parks here and the majority are open for camping year round.
Enjoy, it's a beautiful part of the world.

We drove up to NW Washington the first week of April last year via Death Valley then up through the East slope of the Sierras , Lake Tahoe , Carson and Virginia Citys , meandered NW through northern sierras of California , central Oregon etc. boondocking most the way and did not encounter any issues with freezing water pipes or tanks .
Took the ferry "walk on" out of Port Angeles up to Victoria . An absolutely beautiful city full of great folks . You will have a wonderful time !

In early June, we're heading up I-5 to Anacortes to grab the ferry to Orcas Island for a couple of days. Our preference is for shore power at a minimum. Campendiun had some great places on the way up including this unique setup on Orcas Island which we'll use as a base camp for 3 days to explore

The Sierras in NoCalifornia got snow last night. Both Hwy 50 & 80 required chains this morning to get across Echo & Donner Pass. Keep in mind that last year was our 4th year of drought which meant no snow. This year we have had normal snowfall. However, chain restrictions are usually gone by afternoon because it IS April.

Donner pass? Well, if you get hungry there, you know what to do.

About 30 min outside of Victoria, you have to stay there a few days and rent a fishing boat , and have the time of your life.

A short walk to downtown Victoria , you will not be disappointed. Try and book something close to the water side with views that go on forever. again you will not be disappointed.

I agree with lawbc and recommend westbay as a great spot virtually downtown. We live 5 minutes from Goldsream Provincial Park which is a beautiful spot 20 minutes out of the city but no hookups. Pedder bay is nice but it is about 30-40 minutes out of the city BUT probably one of the best salmon fishing spots in the world. Are you planning on heading up the Island at all?
