Here is where I installed gate post then built the gate in place.

That is cedar fencing and there are NO screws into the steel

Yup

5.5" thick. Deeper around load points like posts and edge dip to retain dirt and "float" footing.

Mine is 5-6 inch - I am not sure of type of concrete used - ill find out - rebar was not recommended - keep in mind that this was done on the cheap by my brother - after the digging - pouring - labor and cost of concrete and materials so far - my cost now is 2500 bucks - brother did a lot of it at cost on his part - only paid laborers and materials - probably 1k more left in retaining wall - terracing and some planting - and a fence and gate - maybe 1500

Neighbor across the road just had new driveway poured. They used a fiberglass reinforced concrete mix.
He is a retired mechanic from our local TWA/American overhaul base, and was telling me that they used this fiberglass reinforced mixture for the concrete there at the base where they drive the airplanes across. Of course....it's a wee bit thicker too......

I have torn out conc. with fiberglass mesh, had to saw cut to break apart,. rebar breaks easily plus does not stop cracking. I have used conc w/fiberglass mesh in center of unheated horse barns with no cracking, some runs 12ft.60ft. with out expansion joints always broomed surface to create surface that horses won't slip and fall, never ever use in stalls only rubber mats. 1 barn had $55,000 mare other show horses owner very happy with mesh conc. Plus side less costs & labor costs.

It is pretty sweet. The rates are low!

We have wired rock speakers - we can control satellite radio, Pandora etc through my iPhone.

We also have lighting around the patio and to the rear door so we can load / unload in the dark.

We're lucky to be able store the Airstream at our house. We designed and built the EP Henry patio to complement the Airstream. So on the weekends we can't get away - we can just walk out the back door and light a fire!

I am planning a new shed project. I plan on using the fiberglass reinforced stuff and also plan on putting dog fence material in there which I have used before. The dog fence is not as thick as the rebar mesh but there are more wires per foot. If you don't want cracks, do it in sections. The fiber reinforced stuff is like $80 a yard and the cheap stuff is $70 a yard so that is a no brainer. The dog fence is cheap enough that even if is does not help, the cost it not that much and it does help because I have busted up slabs with it in there. Eventually, I will also make an Airstream shed. Unless you are building a runway, concrete costs should not be more than a few hundred dollars if you pour it yourself. Of course, the smoothness and surface finish take some experience to get right. You don't want to go any thinner than 4 inches and probabably don't need over 6 inches unless you are going to have full dump trucks driving over it. Figure your yards needed and do a cost estimate. If you have a really big driveway then 4 inch thick looks better. The labor for 6" versus 4" is about the same and don't let them tell you different.

We have a very short 26' X 18' driveway. I'm thinking 4" thick as there's no real load on it, with a 6"X6" wire mesh rebar. If it's that close between the two on material cost I will probably do both also.
The Winters can be brutal here.

We poured a new apron for the garage and they mixed the color into the truck mixer bowl to match the cobble stone drive.

good info...my brother's original calculations came up about 1 yard short - 200 dollar mistake...better to pay for a bit extra than have to pay for them to go get more!!

You always get extra. The only problem with that is that they will usually want to clean out their truck and dump the excess on your property or at least they do that out here in the country. What I do is make a form for a ramp and put excess there and make up the rest with bags and my Harbor Freight cement mixer.

@Perry - my brother I think was trying to cut it too close, but largely it was just a matter likely of a bit of innexperience...which is fine cause I am getting this all at cost of materials and for manual labor so its a real deal I think. As it relates, the extra he ordered post hoc was actually barely enough...he had about a wheel barrel full left after completion....whew....

Today I just payed for materials delivery for block, sand, mortar, gravel....digging the footer soon around the perimeter of the pad and laying the retaining wall...

Last detail will be moving the darn dirt pile - you may ask why we are moving it twice...a good question....dont ask me...argh

I then need to put in a fence back for that section and have some sort of gate...I am think 10 foot wood planks of some sort and a couple 6x6's to have it be able to have some hardwar and such to allow "doors" or "gates" to open and close....my brother will not be doing this...rather my carpenter I think...need to get a quote from him... should not be too difficult of a job I would think....it needs to be functional, nothing too special...

Ive thought about sticking with the chain link smaller type fence and make a gate with something like that...but I kinda like shielding from view my AS...even though I live in a culdesac still will be nice to keep it out of view...I guess...

I want to go ahead and get the quote from my carpenter about a wood structure/roof for the AS as well...I may just go ahead and have it built and avoid the frustration of debris, bird poo, etc...I was going to wait till march/april to do this, but perhaps may just go ahead and "get-r-done" in the next couple months.
