This 4 1/2 car carport at work would make a great Airstream shelter.

Before you build a pad, you need to think about what sort of structure your going to put on top of it. With a pole barn, in general, you put the poles in the ground and then put a slab under that. With conventional contruction, you would make your perimeter thicker and put rebar in there to support the walls. You can also build a pole structure on top of a slab.

Don't start this weekend because you will have a muddy mess.

We just had a metal carport installed for our AS. Poured the slab first. It is right behind the attached garage. The slab for the camper is an extension of the driveway. There is a plug for the camper on the back of the garage and we keep it plugged in most of the time. We have water access there, too. When we're packing up, it's so nice to walk out the back door of the house, keep our feet on concrete (trailer stays cleaner), and a roof over our head. It was raining when we packed up for the last trip, but everything and everybody stayed clean and dry!

Here is one site I found for "plans" after a brief search...
Barn plans, garage plans, storage building plans/blueprints/designs

Read their "About" link..

Have you checked with your local town hall building department to find out if you need permits to build this thing? You may not for where you live, but if you do, don't spend any money until you find out what they will require from you. They may be very specific about what drawings are required and where the building is to be sited and how it is built. Ordering plans and starting construction without knowing this could be a colossal waste of time and money. A word about the plans; mail order plans may not meet local requirements, so you need to be careful.

I am going on the assumption that such a cover or building will require a permit first definitely

Im talking to my contractor about details now - he can secure the permit I believe ....

Yes, your contractor can get your permit. He can also likely has access to a draughtsman who can provide the necessary drawings (if any are required).

$8 is more like it. Most structures are all built about the same. The drawing is plenty to go by. All you need is 2x4's and have some roof trusses made.

Once you get a slab, it is all down hill from there.

Pharm... I posted that in a hurry. My point was there are online sources. These are by an engineer and may be a requirement in your area for code. Cheaper than arkeyyek.

I designed my own then built all trusses, concrete, walls, electric, etc.

Our inspector FAILED ME! Said, "you built it on wrong property!"

The spelling is Architect. And we aren't required for a simple shed.
