Salt in Grey and Black water tanks

When I had my AS Winterized at the RV dealership, I was told that iodine in black and grey tanks helps keep the sensors that detect the level from being coated in calcium. The suggestion was to put a container of salt, a bag of ice and some water in the toilet and then drive for a bit and then flush. I am not sure how I was to get salt in the grey tank but I would say the same method but down the kitchen sink. Have others done this? Thoughts? If it matters, we just purchased a 2016 30' Classic that was previously owned and I don't know how it was maintained. Of course I would not do this until next year when I flushed the system but I am interested in more experienced ASers thoughts.

Thank you for comments.

Hi

The sensors on modern tanks are external to the tank. There isn't a float or anything like that anymore.

Calcium buildup would come from hard water and from ... err... other sources that empty into the waste tanks. Various salts can build up this way.

If you want to take care of the issue, grab some water softener tablets and toss them in a full tank of clean water. Let it sit for a while (like days) and then dump it. Repeat however many times you wish. If it's the fresh water tank, flush it a couple times before you use it.
