Tongue jack

New to the airstream world. Bought a new 2018 Classic 30’ and picked it up at the end of March. Spent a couple weeks on the road. Had several issues from the multiplex system to the tongue jack. Dropped it off a Lazydays in Tucson AZ, on the 15th of April. Lazydays order a new tongue jack on 7th of June from airstream and still waiting. Airstream said they are on back order and don’t know when it will come in. Now I have to start canceling reservation I had planed for the first part of July. Any suggestions on what I can do?

If the jack can be fully retracted, use a bottle jack and a few chunks of wood to raise and lower the tongue...only as needed. Stay hooked up as much as possible.

There are other sources for tongue jacks than direct from the factory. I'd just buy a much better one from another source--its not that much money compared to missing a nice trip...

What problem were you actually seeing with the jack? Perhaps you can buy one not from Airstream and have them reimburse you?

That’s what I was thinking. Call Jackson Center. They’re probably only going to reimburse you for their cost of a replacement unit... But the good news is that you can choose what you want instead of what they want to give you. I believe I recall reading that some are better than others... Sorry I can’t advise on which is best. Hoping someone else can, though.

Can anyone recommend a high-quality bottle jack too?

Thanks,
Rich

Hi

Option 1:

Unless the jack is physically damaged ( = bent / gears stripped ), you *can* hand crank it. With some ingenuity there might be a way to drive the hand crank with a battery powered drill.

Option 2:

They pull a good jack off another trailer in inventory, swap it to yours and *they* can wait forever for AS to get them one.

Option 3: ( in combination with 1 / 2)

Call the factory and complain. They are still shipping trailers. There *must* be jacks somewhere. Get one diverted to your trailer. The jacks are not a unique item ( like a counter top or wardrobe door ). They go on multiple models.

That is a ridiculous long delay. No excuse. Complain. Buy a new jack. Camping world has tons of them. Easy to install. Ask for reimbursement for your cost. Never buy another trailer from that place again.

I ordered a new jack from Amazon and dropped it on. Easy work. Just be hooked up when you do the work.

Did the tongue jack fail on it's own (warranty issue) or was there a user error involved? I ask because that would determine if I went into "angry customer demanding satisfaction" mode with the dealer who waited two months to order the part, or "gosh I'm just an Airstream noob who would appreciate any help he could get" mode. Either way it's not something I would cancel plans over. Easy DIY fix to replace the motor, head or whole jack.

The question is "do you want to replace the inferior Attwood Jack with another?"

I'm replacing my Attwood 4000 K with a Husky 5000.
Shop around. There's about $150 difference in price.

There are also jacks on Ebay for less money than AS plus camping world also pricey, and they are easy install. As far as not ordering for 2 mos. I would let AS no about poor serv. & would never darken there door again. No reason to cancel plans, if you don't feel comfortable changing jack there are plenty of AS owners would help as only about 15, 20 min. to change. Plus many can give instructions how to on forums.

Thanks all for the help. It’s a brand new airstream. Had it 3 days and it broke. Can’t get it to go up. Any suggestions on a good tongue jack.

You missed Molly’sDad’s post (up 2). He wrote, “I'm replacing my Attwood 4000 K with a Husky 5000. Shop around. There's about $150 difference in price.”

Husky is the brand I remember reading about. Supposed to be a good one. Good luck and let us know how it works out!

I have a 2018 FC and mine failed too. I waited about a month to get one shipped out from JC. When dealer installed it, service tech mentioned they have replaced several lately. I think something may be amiss with Atwood jacks and there may be lots of us in this situation. Hope yours turns us soon. I asked for ETA but never got a commitment—UPS just dropped it off one fine day. Fortunately, I had a little time before my summer travels. Good luck!

Just curious. Are the bolt holes standard on all jacks? Ordo you have to drill out new hole depending on brand/model.

That is exactly how the warrantee worked for us....'cept for the reimbursing part. Although they did send some of the parts that they did have in stock.

Just my opinion, but your dealer should take some responsibility. You took your trailer in on Apr 15, they didn’t get the jack ordered until June 7? Maybe that was the plan, but seems slow to me. They should install your purchased jack at no charge right away. Just my opinion..
