Replace my Barker Tongue Jack

HI, guys,
I'm thinking of replacing the tounge jack on my 1989 Excella 29 foot.
It's a Barker.
The folks at AS said they replaced it with a super jack.
Barker doesn't make them anymore.
they make a VIP and a Deluxe Hi-Power Jack.
The question I have is
is the Deluxe Hi-power 3500 worth the extra cash over the VIP 3500?

Curious minds want to know.

thanks

Dave

Barker Tounge Jack

Hello DavCarv. It looks like the Deluxe Hi Power Jack is very simular to the original Barker tounge jack in that it is the only one that has limit switches to disrupt the power when the jack reaches it's limits. It also has a level but that is kinda hoakie.
Having limit switches is easy on the jack as the other 2 just ratchet if they reach the limits. To read about them Google Barker electric Tounge Jacks.

The H & H 3500 Super Duty jack is part of Baker Manufacture in Battle Creek.

This jack works. Most of the newer one take a week to raise the trailer.

I have bought from them within the last 2 months so I think they are still there

The old Barker I have has a limiter and shuts off when it retracts fully.
Is that what u mean ?
And is that worth the extra 150?
Hhhmmm

The Deluxe Hi-Power Jack is actually the current version of the Super Jack and is still called the Super Jack if you look at the picture of the jack head. The difference between the Deluxe and the VIP is the deluxe uses the limit switch shutoff which reduces wear on the head components, and the low friction ball screw which reduces friction and allows less amperage for use.

Is it worth, $150 extra? I would think so in the long run as theoretically it should make the jack last longer. I would go for it if it were me. You can still buy the older style OEM superjack (HowieE's post above) too if you shop around. I know Out of Doors Mart has them, but they are even more expensive the the deluxe.

Just wondering- is it practical to remove the inoperative electric motor ( Barker super jack- 1967 AS) and use it as a hand crank, temporarily ? I have no expectation that the electric jack will work. It's disconnected and I am overwhelmed with other issues to fix on this 1967 AS tht my daughter has just acquired.
Thanks,
Charles T.

Yes there was a crank handle that originally came with the jack. Odds are you don't have it.

Before you remove the motor just take a jumper wire from the positive terminal of the battery and touch it to the motor wire while holding the switch on. That will answer the question of does it work.

If it works it will only take a minute to rewire it.

If it is like mine - and I think it likely is - the original emergency drive handle is a crank with a round cross section and a pin across the end which engages a sort of socket that is accessible once you remove the head.

I have the original crank for mine, but I also made up another driver for it that will chuck into the cordless drill that I use on my Hensley hitch and on the trailer stabilizers.

Can these newer Barkers be mounted on mid 2000 model year Airstreams? My propane cover partially covers the nount plate on my 2008 Classic 25fb. The original Barker on mine is damaged; bent shaft, motor and gear casing shattered so i'm looking at a replacement. There isn't much give in the propane tank cover.

I received a new Superjack yesterday and installed it and today
http://www.barkermfg.com/superjack.jpg
I used it to hitch up the trailer. The jack lifts the trailer with the normal motor gear noise like the damaged old one but when I lower it with the trailer weight on the jack it makes a clunking noise. I had to rotate the head 90deg to have it clear the propane tank but all I did was loosen the set scores and rotate the head then tightened them. I had already bolted the shaft onto the tongue prior to doing this. Anyone have similar issues to noisy operation when retracting the jack? With no weight its back to normal.
