Is my old jack welded on?

After 7 years of cranking in 100+ degree southern california heat, I just bought a new electric jack for our 1969 Globetrotter. Got all my tools out, got the old bolts and nuts off, looking good . . . but it won't come out.

Fine, it wll just take a little more persuading, some penetrating spray (not WD40), and a lot of whacking with a rubber mallet. It still won't come out. I know I've read accounts that some manual jacks have to be "de-welded". Is mine one of the those? And if so, anyone in the Riverside area interested in helping me tackle this?

Doesn't look welded from the pictures. Probably just stuck. You might try setting the weight of the tongue on it using a block (4x4)underneath and some liquid wrench and a few blows downward on the tongue with a sledge. If it is welded it would be under the top plate but you would be able to see it-welds can't be hidden.

Put some wooded blocks under it and krank down the jack. It should force it's self out the top.

Thanks for the advice . . . .

Using the extend the jack method, I got out my trusty sledge hammer and had a go at it. (In the 100 degree sun - what was I thinking?)

After about 5 resounding thunks, it budged about a quarter of inch. (There was much hope and joy in that quarter inch.) Another 15 whacks and it was out of there. Rapture!

Here's some photos of the results. Also replacing the coupler latch, spring and spoon. (Anyone have advice?)

Towster - nice work. No advise on the coupler replacement but need to do the same - mine is exactly like your old one. Let us know what you used and how difficult it was to install please.

I replaced coupler on a '73 31' int sovereign this summer. With a little sweat, blood, an angle grinder, a wrecker bar and a good neighbor it was fixed. Throw in an Atwood heavy duty electric hitch with manual backup an she was good to go.

I junked two extension chords in the process, those sparks are pretty, but are flying red hot pieces of metal!

the shop vac went in there 6 ft and a lot of corn (rust) flakes came out


i spent $39.95 at trailer parts superstore then had a certified welder come to my house. whadya know, he lives three doors down and shares the same as$#*!e of a neighbor. we're now allies in da 'hood




don't forget to use some primer to cling to the virgin coupler, then some nice shiny aluminum paint to finish. I bought a new break away switch but never installed it. I sold the trailer and bought a vintage AS moho instead and plan to keep the moho for a decade or so. I will move back to a tt when the kids are grown all going to plan. Plans do change!!
