How do I lube the tongue jack

I have the original tongue jack on my '63 Globetrotter and it works fine but I would like to lubricate it. I cant't see any way to do this as the thing is sealed at the top and has no fittings of any kind. How Do I lube it and with what?

I use a product called "Boeshield", made originally for Boeing aircraft co. It is a spray lubricant containing solvents and a wax. It leaves a durable coating on whatever you spray it on and acts as a great lubricant. It comes with a small red tube like can be found on WD40 and this can be used to get the lubricant into the jack by spraying it under the cap that sits on top of the jack tube. It is available at West Marine and probably on line as well. You will find it to be a miracle product with many uses.

I'm assuming you have a hand crank model?
Most hand crank models can be dismantled by simply jacking them down all the way. Easiest way is to remove the jack from the tongue (if it's bolted on with the 3 bolts)and screw it down till the 2 tubes seperate. If the jack is welded on to the tongue or if you are handy with a post hole digger you could dig a hole about 20" deep and then with the trailer atached to the tow vehicle park the jack so it is over the hole. Once I had the jack apart I would use high pressure wheel bearing grease and grease the threaded rod up and down it's length.
I agree it is important to keep them greased. I couldn't find another post where I mentioned having had two similar jack type devices fail because the threads in the jack were dry and wore the special nut out causing the jack to drop.
It's an easy job to lube.

I like the Boesheild idea, I've used it for a lot of years on my wood working machinery. Got to agree ,great stuff. Just never thought about it for the jack.

Hi 63air--I always use WD40 in the manner indicated by MW47OVERLANDER, by spraying under the cap of the jack shield, at the start of every trip. I use WD40 because it is always handy. Also spray all the plug in electrical connections, the joints that need lub on the equalizer hitch, and the stabilizer threads and joints, at the same time. Been doing this for 18 years and still going strong.--Frank S
