Yeah its some kind of composite. Bakelite or somthing like it. Another dumb design feature (if I remember right) is it is pressed on to a metal spindle. I found a RV guy who had a replacement gear that was solid metal. Worked fine for a couple of years on my 73 and is still working as far as I know.
