I would want to avoid unequal wheel loads. I realize folks may do this for less than a day, but I'd only want to do it for the time it takes to replace a failed tire with the spare.
FWIW, I use pressure treated wood planks for leveling. With a pickup it's easy enough to store in various sizes. I'd agree they're heavy and cumbersome. But until something else bridges the gap, I'll stay with them. (Same for plastic Legos for stabilizer pads. Gave away the last set).
