Barker VIP 3500 18" Hoist vs 24"
I want to put a new jack on my trailer as I don't particularly trust the original one any more (H&H?). Was was looking at several jacks, one was the Husky Brute 4500. This uses a ball/screw mechanism and is supposed to be a nice jack. A good value too with a 4500# rating. However, it is fairly new and while folks seem pretty happy with it. it doesn't have a rep yet. Another was the Bulldog 4000. Again folks that have them seem to like them (from reading posts on RV.net) and it comes with a 5 year warratny. But it is "built" by Fulton, which doesn't even seem to have a web site (or at least not one that comes up very easily) so I am kind of thinking how will that warranty service work out. Plus like the Husky it lacks a track record.
I know there are others such as Atwood etc. but at this point I think i am going with the Barker VIP 3500. I like the idea of the extra capacity of the 3500 vs the 3000 as it has to the back of my loaded 3/4 Duramax in addition to the front of the trailer (the current jack starts to give up as the lift height increases and has crapped out before).
This brings me to my choice. They make an 18" lift / post travel version and a 24". I like the idea of the 24" as we camp in a lot of state parks, some of which are "rustic" and at times require the coupler to be almost on the ground for level or way up in the air. What I was wondering about the 24" is if any of you have this jack and if so, does it look "goofy" with it's extra height on the front of the trailer. I think it might interfere a bit with opening the propane tank cover, but that should not be an issue. I know this is aesthetics and not a practical issue, but I am still interested if anyone has one on their trailer.
Thanks

Hmmmm, I guess no one has this jack. I'm thinking that I really could use the 24" version and may order it. If I do, perhaps I will take a photo and post it on this thread as an aid to folks further down the line.

Installed the Barker VIP 3500 with the 24" stroke today. Easy install. Works great, sounds like it is not working as hard as the stock jack. Doesn't sit as high as I was worried about. Does block the propane take cover top a bit when opened, but no big deal. There is a photo of it in my gallery.

BTW, here is a photo of the installed "high lift" jack to give an idea of the height. The increased height hasn't caused any problems.

24" versus 18" jack replacement
Thanks for the information regarding your 24" jack installation. I am contemplating changing my jack out since I bent the post slightly and it always blows the fuse if I extend it all the way. I looked into parts but a post assembly replacement is more expensive than a new jack.
We also have found difficulty in a few situations where the longer jack would be beneficial. I am interested to know if the replacement jack bolted into the same holes in the frame???
Thanks for any help.

idmtman: On mine it easily bolted to the existing holes in the frame. Very easy installation.

Am I missing it, I didn't see where the jack has a manual jack handle in case of electrical failure? You know some day it will happen.......

Buyers Jack
Do you like the Buyers Jack? Saw these a while back and was wondering about them. We have a manual jack and I've been contemplating getting a power jack and saw this one. Seems like it has all the features. I see it simply plugs into the TV-I had a question about where these jacks wire to-guess they eliminated that issue by plugging into the TV. Where did you buy your jack?

So far so good
I haven't had a lot of experience with it yet, however,I really like the option of plugging into TV or TT. I bought it locally in Waldorf,Md. at The Hitch Man.I think this jack was intended for Large boat trailers with no onboard battery.

Just installed a Barker Super jack and the 18" lift just barely gets the tongue over the ball. 24" would be much better. Wasn't aware that it was an option. Oh well, next time ;-)
