Axle Weight Review

I just returned from a 7,000 mile, 96 day journey with my 2010 27FB Classic. I pull it with a 2011, Chevy crew cab, long bed, 4WD, 2500 gasoline truck. I don't travel light. I had a canoe, a generator, a motorcycle, four bicycles and gear in the back of the truck. The trailer rides level and there were no issues pulling it.

Yesterday I found a CAT scale and decided to give it a try, but I don't know how to interpret the numbers.

The truck with trailer is rated for 16,000 pounds. I came in at 16,060. The front axle was at 3840, back was 5420 and the trailer wheels at 6800. Aside from being 60# overweight, do the axle values tell me anything about my set up?

First, you need to compare those weights to your truck and trailer axle (GAWR) ratings. The individual axle ratings are on a sticker, probably in the driver door frame.

You should also compare your total trailer weight, including tongue weight, to the trailer GVWR. You will need some more data to do that.

Second, most on here who weigh use a three step process.

1. Weigh the truck alone, getting weights for each axle.
2. Weigh the truck trailer combination with weight distribution off, getting a weight for each of the three axles.
3. Get a third weight with weight distribution on.

Report those 8 numbers (2, 3, and 3 axles) back here and someone will surely provide an opinion and hopefully back it up with reasoning what you need to do.

I'm shooting in the dark, but my F150 front axle is rated at 3900#. You are carrying about the same weight on yours. Based on that I'd guess that you need a little more weight distribution to shift some of your rear axle weight off the rear and to the front and the trailer, but that's a guess.

What brand hitch are you using and what is it's rating. Are you using a sway control? If so, exactly what kind?

Axle weights are fine, but you need the other scale numbers to check proper WD. I wouldn't worry about the 60# over on GCWR. Water in tank? Might reconsider that, but there is some margin in the GCWR spec.
