28' International jack placement

I need to replace my tires, I found the arrow indicating the jack location. My question is do I place the jack on the arrow or set it in further to line up with the main frame... Thanks

There should be a 2"x2" square of aluminum behind the axles on the frame on each side. That's where the service center at JC put the jack on mine.

That arrow is "NOT" for jack purposes.

But it is for a stabilizer jack.

Jacking the trailer up should only be done behind the rear wheel, placing the jack on the vertical "axle mounting plate".

Andy, the arrow points to a diamond-shaped piece of aluminum that my manual states is the proper jacking point. My stabilizing jacks (the electric screw kind) are located fore and (further) aft.

What your book says is WRONG.

The book should say "STABILIZER JACK" only.

If you lift from that plate you stand the chance of having the jack slip, punching a hole in the underbelly and maybe in the floor.

Again, that label is for a stabilizer jack, not a lifting jack.

The owners manuals have said that same "WRONG" thing for years.

what is the best/safest way for a tire dealer to replace the tires on an AS. i have a 2005, 2 axle 22'.

i plan to replace the 4 tires soon but don't want to take the chance of someone doing damage to my AS.

should they use a jack? a tire ramp? does the AS stay hooked up to the TV while they change the tires?

can i trust what i see in the owners manual?

i would probably want to stay and 'monitor' them while the work is done.

any info greatly appreciated,

Jon.

The safest way to lift any Airstream from the 1961 models and up, is to use the axle mounting plate.

For a single axle, place the jack rearward of the tire.

For a tandem axle, place the jack between the tires.

For a tri-axle, place the jack between the last 2 tires.

A bottle jack or a small floor jack can be used.

DO NOT use the spot Airstream has marked to lift the trailer.

That spot marked "JACK" is for stabilizer jacks, "ONLY".

You can lift the trailer with the tow vehicle still attached, but it's not a very good idea, since unusual stresses will be applied to the hitch bars, and the hitch platform.

in a similar vein -

do you recommend metal tire stems?
i plan to get a remote tire air pressure monitoring system [hawkshead or similar] and i have seen some posts that recommend getting the metal stems as they are more durable.

any ideas/suggestions?

Metal valve stems are superior to the rubber type, any day, hands down.

unless the diamond is NOT properly located, it IS under the main frame rail, so USE it.

YES that's the jacking UP location right under the frame rail.

in THIS case U can trust the owners manual.

the spot marked JACK is for a tire jack, not stabilizers.

IF you doubt this email the factory and ask.

they use that DIAMOND shaped spot marked JACK every day to lift them.

i've posted pictures of the factory service center USING the marked spot on my 34...

they do the SAME on the tiny trailers...

ONCE the trailer is OFF the ground via the tongue jack and a jack on the DIAMOND...

jack STANDS are placed under the axle mounting plate for safety while working...

but the DO NOT jack'em up there.

help fight the posting of NONsense, where ever possible...

FULL metal (outer) stems are STIFFER and are recommended by all of the tpms makers...

because the mass/weight of the sensor can stress/bend stems.

hawkshead will INCLUDE metal stems with the kit and they are OK stems to use.

be SURE that any metal stems are mounted with RUBBER gaskets inside and OUTSIDE...

because any place the chromed steel stem contacts the alloy rims WILL corrode and then LEAK air.

of course IF the wheels are steel AND the stems steel, that's not an issue, but the bambi has alum/alloy rims.

We also have a 22' CCD and recently had to have a tire shop remove the roadside front tire to replace a valve stem. In the first photo you can see that access to the Airstream specified jacking point on the roadside behind the rear wheel is blocked, especially if using a large floor jack. There is maximum of 8.5" between the black and gray tanks that are mounted below the frame, and the waste plumbing is also mounted right next to the frame.
In the second photo you can see where he placed the jack -- I assume this is the vertical axle mounting plate that Andy referred to. (The galvanized tank in the photo is our fresh water, mounted fore of the wheels.)
Hope we did OK.

That jack is placed on the axle mounting "bracket".

The axle mounting plate, is what the axle bracket is bolted to.

Jacking on the axle mounting "plate" is the recommended method.

I get the feeling that jacking a 22' CCD is a Catch-22 -- -- all the correct places are inconveniently inaccessible with conventional garage jacks.

Andy, if I understand correctly, there is not enough space to accommodate the floor jack on the mounting 'plate' -- possibly a bottle jack would fit, but it would be tight and certainly not as secure nor convenient as it should be.

You can use a bottle jack, but, be careful.
