White Roof Sealant on Newer Airstream

OK – Attempt three at posting this – I have localized my leak down to 3 to 5 rivets on my roof in the white painted area. First thought it was the AC – NOPE, then the stove vent – NOPE, window – NOPE, individually taped rivets and sealed the underside of the road side awning rail – no luck. Of course you have to stop and let stuff dry out so that you are sure where you are putting water is the real leak. After many days of trial and error – these rivets are the source! A couple of them are off center drilled holes with exposed penetration next to the rivet head.

OK – the question is – WHAT IS THE FACTORY WHITE SEALENT USED ON THE NEWER AS ROOFS? It’s all over the place up there. Tough stuff, rubber like, the installers must have been paid by the pound. I would like to get some tomorrow and do the sealant shuffle to get all the rivets covered.

Thank you for your help, Mike

Mike,

I re-installed MaxxAir fans on my 19CCD as replacements for the dead vent and Fantastic, and bedded them in a BIG bead of SikaFlex 221 white and then used a self-leveling roof product made by Dicor. I think the Dicor stuff is what you are talking about. You lay down a bead and it spreads itself out. Great Stuff!!!! I use cases of the stuff on all kinds of RV roofing problems and installs.

Let me know if you have problems finding it.

Thank You Lew for coming through with an answer, I'll try to find it locally around here - there are two good SOB RV shops on the way home I can call on. If I can't get it I will PM you.

Lew,

What is the recommended procedure to prepare the aluminum surface for the white roofing product? I have a center panel on my roof that I want to coat with the white material and hopefully seal all the rivets up there as well.

Hey Uwe,

Nothing special, just be sure that the surface is VERY clean and free of any other sealants or wax. I use 3-M adhesive remover as a prep cleaner, but Prep-sol or any hi-flash cleaner like carb cleaner would work well in this situation as well. The sealant sticks to just about any roofing surface as long as it's clean!!!!
