Vent Stack Replacement Opinion

I’ve tried to keep our 71 totally vintage but I’ve reached the point - on the exterior- that I’m going to give a little.

We’ve had a minor leak in the rear curbside curve that I’ve been chasing for over two years. Everything on the roof and rear has been resealed to the tune of hours of work. That’s fine - it probably needed to be done anyway. The first item replaced of course was the vent stack gasket. I know it’s done as right as possible given how short a section of vent pipe that Airstream left above the roof line. Finally, after all this sealing, just out of frustration, I taped a baggie over the vent stack. You guessed it - no more leak. All that work only to go back to the very first item sealed.

With all that said - I’m done with the open top Airstream vent stacks and the gasket that has to be constantly watched for replacement.

Here are my options. I can prime, paint aluminum and clear coated the round vents. That would be more of a 60’s look I think. We can go with the stainless vent cover meant for marine use. It looks much like the cover Airstream used for the range vent. Kinda shiny though.

Any thoughts on which would be less obtrusive….

I have both OEM vents with rubber gaskets and screens sealed with Vulkem 116 and they don't leak. What am I doing wrong?

I like the looks of the boat vent. I vote for that one.

Nice aluminum cap. Others have used a piece of rubber inner-tube under it to create a long lasting gasket.

I have used the commonly available cheap plastic ones similiar to the ones on the right in your picture. I painted them silver with fusion paint.
They work fine and the vent cover police haven't caught me yet.

I just got a call from the VCP. They were asking a lot of questions. I'd lay low for a while if I were you. ;-)

On the 68's they used this type of vent-
Airstream Plumbing Stack Cover

The vent pipe tucks under the curved lip at the top and any water that falls goes down the pipe. There is no gasket. I don't know what year they changed to the open style with the rubber gasket. I bought one of these from VTS and and was able to repair the other one with fiberglass. Just a thought if you want to keep things original. That said, painting the round vents would be easy and would look fine.
