Sealants Summary ...

It is extremely expensive and you need a special sealant gun along with a special mixer to use. If I didn't have access I would use one of polyurethanes.

Believe it or not I obtained my sealant gun an mixer from the Boeing surplus store many years ago when we did a project out of Paine Field.

I would suggest that EternaBond Alumibond be added to the list of products to use on the roof to eliminate leaks. Great product to use on roof seams, around vents and stacks, etc.

Just a note on my experience with Eternabond sealant tapes.

They seem to apply well, are super sticky at first and seem to be bullet-proof after application. But having had reports of continual leaking on SOB roofing a year or 2 down the road, the situations have ALWAYS led to the Eternabond tapes' adhesive failing!

When I started as an RV tech, I used to use the stuff by the case all the time, but after seeing the failures and having to deal with the massive cleanup of the Eternabond adhesives, I discontinues using them totally.

My go to adhesive sealants are from Sika and include SikaFlex 221 in the many colors available and the 715 for self leveling use (as mentioned on the list). I have recently started testing and using a similar high solids, self-leveling adhesive/sealant from a US company called Alpha Sealants. This is not presently available to the general public, and takes 3-5 days to fully cure, but it IS available in black, white, grey and off-white. Very similar to SikaFlex 751 but with more body.

I've shot a couple of roofs with the Alpha sealants and will wait another couple of weeks to do a final inspection, but I will never use Eternabond again!!

In fact, I have several rolls available for postage!!!!! PM me for details.

What temperature ranges do these various products work at? I don't have any immediate urge to go out an seal something, but if I did, what works in the winter? It was 4 degrees F this morning at 9:00 (and 56 two hours later...).

I'd wait until the warm days of spring to apply any of these sealants. Unless you have a warm building you could use for a few days.

Aluminum Pigmented Gutterseal

Here is what I used on some of my small overlapping panel seams, all the eyelids above the door and windows, as well as the seam around the door where the exterior panels meet the cast aluminium door frame. It applies a nice rounded convex bead from a metal squeeze tube to the surface which after drying overnight changes to be a tidy sucked in concave bead.

It is weird to work with though, there is zero tooling time... as you are laying the bead the product skins over within an inch of leaving the tube ( I discovered this when I wobbled off course a bit and tried to go back over where I had been) but with a steady enough hand to lay a straight line it looks amazing and blends right in to the trailer. One tube has been enough to do my entire 23' trailers seams.

Aluminum Pigmented Gutterseal is one of the more difficult trailer restoration products to find because it is designed--as the name suggests--for the aluminum gutter industry.*

Unlike Vulkem or Parbond, Gutterseal it has a tendency to slightly wick into seams, making it a popular choice for sealing panel lap seams.

5 ounce squeeze tube does not require a caulking gun.

Contains Acetone, Methyl Acetate and Tert-Butyl Acetate. See MSDS.

I would put that Lexel on the roof as well. It does not break down like the polyurethane sealants.

Love this thread!!!! Had a store credit we needed to use before it expired and didn't need any parts but I just quick looked at this thread and ordered several of the sealants we will need soon.

SO CONFUSING!! I'm a newbie getting ready to remove-reseal-replace a few windows that I believe are leaking. I'm leaning away from Sikaflex because BoldAdventure mentioned it was so hard to use. SO, can I use Vulkem on the windows?? I'm noticing in the list it is only mentioned for the roof? And if i DID use vulkem, what solvent should I prep with and what fluid do i use for clean up???
