Greetings,
We recently purchased a new 2008 Safari Front Bedroom 27'. Since its arrival there has been a water leak in the rear window. We have an awning package (3 awnings) and solar panels, all installed at the factory.
Water drips in at the top of the screen (not the glass) and drips behind the dinette table and down the inside wall. This leak occurs after a heavy dew (not necessarily when it is raining). We have taken our coach to 6 authorized dealers so far; still leaks sometimes.
Another (new) leak has occurred at the top of the back bumper, where the bumper and the external coach wall come together. This is below the window that leaks (above). The other day, after our last attempt at caulking the leaking window, we parked at an angle and water started leaking from the top of the rear bumper. This water was odorless and raspberry in color. We think its color is coming from fiberglass insulation. The drip was about a pint in 15 minutes.
The following day we were parked in Big Sur with the rear facing south and full sun, no rain. Inside screen began dripping at 8 a.m. and dripped very slowly til 12:15.
I dried the seam along the top of the back bumper. Waited 20 minutes and then placed a paper towel long the downward edge of this seam. Paper towel came away wet.
Can anyone help us with this and possibilities. We are scheduled for another repair.
Hi cooney -- Welcome to the Forums under difficult circumstances. Leaks can come from quite a distance. On mine there are ripples and hollow spots where the roof sheeting meets the end caps. Have the dealers (6!) looked up around the Fantastic Fan? Skylight?
Go on top and see if the factory screwed down all of the vents, ant., skylight & solar panels and did they caulk.
This may sound crazy, but they place all of the above on my 06 with doublesided tape and never went back up there.
Also, do the leaks happen after AC has been running, if so might be drain tube or the pan.
Good luck.
We had a similar problem with our 2007 25'. The gasket seal that is used on the rear window is cut at a 45 degree angle at the four corners to allow the gasket to make the 90 degree turns. The point that they are joined to form the turns may be the weak spot. The water can make its way in between the gasket and the glass or may be coming in between the gasket and the aluminum window frame. Ours was leaking at the top curb side of the window and fell onto the screen and then down the back of the rear wall. Our dealer replaced the gasket and the problem was fixed.
We appreciate the ideas.... We have an appointment (the fourth) with C&G Trailers in Bellflower CA. We hope for the best. Does anyone have any experience with this company?
Sad to relate, even the service managers and technicians have said, candidly, that the new Airstreams are seriously lacking quality control, compared to the pre-Thor units. Without any experience of the older ones, we can attest that QC was extremely poor on our 2008 Safari. Our list of problems, from the major to the trivial, has been huge, and the main reason we bought a new unit instead of a used one was to avoid repair issues. However, all of the service people try to be helpful, and our trailer is beautiful and comfortable. We hope that we feel in time that it's really worth what we paid...
Some states have a lemon law that may apply in this case. You do have consumer laws that will be in effect on something like this. As I recall, south Dakota has something special on warranties??/ good luck
