Gasket on door or inside of door?
Well, I'm starting over on a new to me trailer. The gaskets on the storage locker are installed inside of the door (not the door itself). Is this the correct placement on an '86 Sovereign? My '76 had them applied to the door. There is substantial rot next to the door (and about a million leaks--never believe sweet old ladies) & I just need to know if I should change this right away in my quest for rainproofing. Thanks in advance.

I have her up for sale. Yes, I did just strip & polish her. I actually had everything finished on her to working perfectly. I just caved into the pressure from my husband to get a larger one so he & my sons have more room when they go hunting. I don't know if I'll tackle the polish again. I will be stripping this one after I complete caulking everything. It has alot more leaks than were apparent when I bought it. Four spots that are rotten on the floor! I did know about one. Will be recarpeting, reupholstering, redraping, etc., etc. Anyhow, I've already recaulked the rubrail & beltline & will start on the windows next. Surprisingly, this coach had hardly any caulk left on it....I don't know what they used, but it wasn't very good! So about that gasket....?

I've never seen gasket except on the door itself - not to say someone didn't build one that way. Have you decided which gasket your going to use? The U shaped or the quarter round shaped stuff? Inland shows both.

I used the quarter round shaped stuff on my '76. I guess it would be the same. There's something on the inside now that fits around the lip & I just wondered if that was what was supposed to be there.

I have my trunk door off and at the house - I'll post a picture of the mount on it later - it may help you.

Gary,
I need to know how the gasket goes on an '86. I see you have a '71. Don't go through the trouble of taking a picture for me unless you have an '86 or so hanging out in your barn. I really should take a picture of what I have & post it so you see what I'm talking about. I'll get to it later today. Thanks for your trouble!

Your trailer uses a triangular gasket that has double sided tape on one side.
The gasket is placed against the side of the door frame, with the tape side on the back side of the aluminum door face.
Be sure to use "super weatherstrip adhesive" both on the tape side of the gasket, and, on the back side of the door face.
DO NOT apply adhesive but to one side of the triangular gasket.
If you don't use adhesive the gasket will fall off in short order, guaranteed.

So, Andy, would this be the same variety that I bought from you for my '76 Overlander? I still have some left & can use it. And, as I understand you, the gasket goes on the door, not on the trailer itself, right?

Same exact gasket for both those trailers. It's triangular in shape.
The gasket goes on the door, not the door jamb.
The door jamb is the part of the door framing that is riveted to the shell.

You can get the sealent that Andy mentioned at NAPA auto stores. It is made by 3M.

The proper material to use is "adhesive," not sealer, or sealant.
You should only use 3M's 8008 "super weatherstrip" adhesive, which is black.
DO NOT use any "yellow" adhesive, as it won't stay very long.
