Exterior gasket material?

We have stripped down our Airstream for polishing and noticed when doing so that there are gaskets behind everything. We found them behind the running lights, rock guard, name plates. Does anyone know where to buy new gasket material? Also when I install the new gaskets do I vulkem them in place? Thanks for the help.

When I restored/renovated and polished mine last spring I used the old gaskets but made sure to reseal everything with Vulkem. Everything is working great!.

I was hoping we would be able to do the same however they were pretty much toast and fell apart during removal. I think the AZ summers for 45 years did them in.

One of the best gasket materials I've used is shower pan liner. From a "how to" web site:

"The flexible liners, available at wholesale stores and ceramic tile shops, are made of a rubber-like material that is impervious to water and resistant to the many chemicals found in a home. In fact, the stuff is probably an environmentalist's nightmare—it never seems to deteriorate."

I recently asked a similar question and "wasagachris" recommended butyl tape. I haven't tried it yet. I did try straight Vulcem on a drip cap but it was not a clean as the caulk strip or gasket on my '59.

You can get any type of gasket material from a good auto parts place such as NAPA. Sal.

When I replaced the seals on my roof vents, I bought a small sheet of roofing rubber. It was sold in a roll of 3' X 3' pieces. The material is similar to an innertube for a car tire but was light grey in color. I also ran a bead of Vulkem around the outside. If I need to remove my running lights again for polishing, I will use the same material. I found the material at Home Depot in the roofing area.
