1976 Globetrotter - new window gaskets

Greetings,

My Globetrotter needs new rubber around the windows - can you tell me what style rubber I need to buy, where to buy it and how to remove old rubber & adhesive & what adhesive to use when installing new gaskets? I do know how to remove the windows. The same applies to the door - want to replace the gasket as p/o put wrong gasket on.

Some of the window levers have rust over the chrome - any suggestions on cleanup are welcomed.

I plan on taking my time and doing one window at a time.

Thanks,

Ken in MN

I used "D" shaped seal available from Inland RV, P/N 45370, for both windows and door. The nice lady that answers the phone can even tell you how much you will need for you model trailer. I used MEK to clean up the old adhesive, It is extremely flammable and all safety cautions with it use should be followed.

Thanks, Kip,

I'm familiar with MEK - very noxious & flammable.

The folks at Inland RV are very helpful and delivery is fast too.

Using a small wire wheel in a drill, is the easiest way to remove the old gasket, 9burnish off) after you tear off what you can.

No hazard from any solvents that way, plus, much much faster.

So what is the RX for getting the rust off the window levers that attach to the knobs that move out and in?

Window lift arms are easily removeable.

A good rust remover is "Limeaway".

When the lift arm is rust free, may take over night, clean the arm, dry it off and then paint it.

After the paint dries, reinstall the lift arms.

Then enjoy a cool one.

After a few months camped on the beach in Mexico my lift arms were rusted too. I took them off, rubbed them down with emory cloth and painted them with metal silver paint. I took the opportunity to change some discolored nuts and bolts at the same time. They look great..

According to the MSDS for LimeAway, the active ingredient is phosphoric acid, which is indeed a excellent way of preparing steel parts for painting. Another trade product is Jasco Metal Etch, which is also phosphoric acid. Home Depo sells similar stuff by the gallon, if you're treating a whole Airstream frame....

For severely rusted parts, electrolytic rust removal using a battery charger works well, and can be used as long as necessary w/o the danger of etching too much on the clean parts. Here's a link...

I've used this trick for removing rust from old steam engines, lathes, etc. It also removes paint, btw.
