Stove vent, 70's vintage should be opening when you turn the fan on perhaps it is stuck shut? Here is a partial scan of the stove hood assembly. I will take a look at mine when I get home and see if there is any addtional mechanism involved...

It's a two-part process. You open the vent, there is a lever inside the overhead cabinet, and then twist a round switch to turn on the fan.

My 75 is a one step process...you pull the lever in the cabinet and the vent opens and the fan turns on...some kind of mirco switch...similar to what it in the overhead vent in the front that isn't there anymore If Tom will chime in with the specfic year and model we can help him out a bit more.

My '72 had the one-step lever/switch, but the '75 has a lever inside the cabinet, that you move left, and push up, then a round switch similar to the overhead light switch that you twist to turn on the fan. A year would be a great help in determining which way it is supposed to work.
It is a 1976 25 foot Int. with an "island" type setup.
One step lever, pull down on the control panal mounted above the control panel.
