It is so that you can take it apart for replacement of the rubber flashing. It is not just a gasket. Since the pipe can move up and down as the trailer is towed over bumps it is installed with a flexible rubber flashing. It will eventually crack and start to leak. Then you need to replace it. If you want to drill out rivets when it needs replacing go ahead.

The gasket material only last a couple of years, inlandrv.com has the vent covers, gaskets and screens!

I just ordered a pair of vent covers from the Mobile RV place in Ft. Meyers. It is my understanding that they DO NOT have an insect screen so one will need to be fabricated. How have you all done it ??? The covers that Airstream sells are plastic and have a screen barrier built in. The older metal ones they used to use you simply folded over a screen material and with a flap of rubber held it all together. This needed to be re-done every few years but is there a better way ????

I finally settled on a couple of cast aluminum escutcheons, although it really wasn't a "finished" look.

Near where I live a new store opened that specializes in mobile home parts with a little in the way of RV stuff. Just to see what they had I stopped in to wander around. What to my wondering eyes should appear???

They are aluminum and they are just the ticket.

Looking for them.

I purchased some years ago from MHD in Florida. Recently called about 10 stores no one wants to ship. These guys will. Just make sure your getting the right units as they have a different variety. I paid around 50 for a pair shipped to MN. They have went up in price like everything else, but well worth it. Just got mine a month ago, and have to say they look great! I wrapped plumbing vents with the butyl tape, stuck a piece of aluminum screen inside for bees, and sealed vents to trailer with gray trempro 635 from VTS, and fastened with 4 rivets per vent. Good luck.

I bought one when they sold them on ebay. I tacked a dish scrubber in with Sika to keep the wasps out.
