vent question

I have been up on the roof most of the day re-sealing a mess of 31 years and it has started out as a heck of a job, after 4 hours of work I only have the way back vent and end cap done. When I got up there I noticed the past owners had sealed every rivet All of them on the top can't wait to get a full count how many are up there and the vent and seam on the end cap have some kind of white sealant chalky looking comes off easy with mineral spirits what is it? Anyway my question is the vent I have worked on today is all metal top and all good shape raises fine and all. The 2 front vents I will start on Wednesday may be a problem they work and all look the same as the back one but they have plexy or some kind of plastic on the very top. The second one we have a small leak I think due to the plastic being a little warped. Is this normal on these vents or has someone in the past added this plexy. The plastic parts are riveted on. I would love to replace all the fans and vents but they work and we have no problems with them except that small leak. What I'm thinking is taking the piece where we have the leak and replace with plexy or something any ideas?

Hi, Becky,

If you have the integrated fan/vent/light/skylight fixtures, yes, they did come with some type of plastic on top of the vents. If your trailer has the rear bedroom, as it appears in your gallery, I can imagine why the back fan's skylight got blocked off.

I think I'm going to replace mine with aluminum covers because the skylights let the inside covers get pretty darn warm about noon time.

I would replace the plastic with corrigated Lexan. It give a dispesed light. Has insulating value and is better resistant to sunlight and hail damage. It also makes inside of the trailer a bit brighter. it is available in 1/4 thick sheets (looks like cross section of cardboard) from home stores or hardware.

Torch works good , actually not too hard at all, drill the rivets out and use a sharp putty knife to kind of slice thru the caulk. Clean with mineral spirits and bed the new stuff in a bead of Vulkem, rerivet or screw back into place. I reccomend that you use stainless steel fasteners where ever possible on the exterior.
