seems that they are a big issue with alot of Airstreams. mine was sealed shut when we got the trailer, and we didn't mess with that. until recently

it still leaked a bit, even though it was sealed up. hubby got tired of dealing with it and crawled up to take a closer look. it was caked with silicone, but apparently in all the wrong places, because it obviously wasn't stopping the leak... and the lid for the skylight was held down with 8 screws, 2 on each edge. he removed all those, and now the skylight actually works, despite one missing crank handle (it still works if you put a screwdriver into the hole and turn) and once hubby sealed the 8 screw holes it also no longer leaks. our problem now is.. we don't have trim for it... so its an ugly hole in the roof... AND, since it was sealed shut when we got it, the screen is long gone. anyone have an idea where we can get a screen and/or trim?

Skylights allow great amount of light into the coach....vista views do as well. I specifically opted not to have a skylight installed and from the sound of the general folks out there replacing them even on fairly new units, it seems to have been a sound decision...however, I do wish I had a few vista views.

For vintange, I would check with vintagetrailersupply or inland rv.

VTS and Andy both have replacements.

The less windows and vents, the better off.
Less chance for leaks and warmer in winter.

The screen and screen frame is the same as a house screen. There are 2 different frame thickness, you want the thinest one. you also need to have a gromet installed at each crank. Your other vent screens should be a good example. Do you have the 4 little clips to hold the screen in? Good Luck! most glass co's. make custom screens.

hmmm. shouldn't be a problem to get a screen made... but color me confused as how to install it. i need a gromet at each crank? i guess the crank handles come off for screen installation? i have no idea how to go about removing the one handle i have left, tho. and i have no little clips at all. anyone have a pic of a correctly installed screen i can compare to?

and as for looking at my other vents for comparison... none of them are original, they're all the square vents you can buy from any RV parts store, and those come with their own screens with a super-skinny plastic frame. i think i'm going to replace them with fantastic fans in a few months :-/

The handle has a small hole, i think 2 small holes, in one of the holes push with a small nail or an awl it should release the handle. you will be pushing in a small ball to release the handle. The gromets are the same ones that are on a tarp. I will try to get a pic for you.

A hail storm made a hole on the outer dome of the skylight. What is the cost to replace?

I'll take a couple of pictures of our '64 skylight once I get out there today. Its about 30 & snowing right now...but we going out anyway to finish some more wood for our '56.

Check the phone book for people that do screens. In our town there is a guy that does mobile work and will come to your place. As for the trim, I am going to redo mine in wood, however if you want to stay more original, go to a heating and duct work shop with a template of what you need, and they should be able to whip one up. Make sure you have them use aluminum however, as most duct work is galvanized! Here is a picture of the screen with grommets.

Here are some pics of ours in our '64 GT. There aren't any "clips" on ours to hold it in place, it's just held by the two knobs. There are set screws to remove the knobs and take the screen off.

Thanks everybody, I went on the roof with some tape, liquid nails sealant, and scissors, covered the hole for now, but while up there I discovered the AC cover is also damaged from the side I could not see from the ground. So, it will go to the local RV shop to get it replaced. I enjoy all the input. My heart breaks to hear of all the damage in the Austin, TX area. Here in Lawton, OK the wind has been blowing hard, hard to stay on the roof of the RV. God be with all of us. VC
