Replacing vent gaskets on old Argosy

Hello all. Does anybody have any comments on replacing the vent gaskets on our old Argosy. I've replaced them before but the new gasket material doesn't want to stay stuck to the cap. I used rubber foam from home depot because the stuff I got from a vintage trailer place was open cell foam and let water right through it. One idea was to put the gasket on the trailer side instead of the cover, but i don't know. Weather strip adhesive maybe?
Thanks G
