New Fantastic Fan Vintage (pics)
I found a nice fantastic fan on here from Vintage Trailer. Here are the pics.
It will be a couple weeks before I can put it in but I'll take more pics.

Great! Uh, don't do like I did, and throw that big square piece of foam away. That's the mounting gasket, and I had to dumpster-dive for it...

and be aware that that foam gasket is open-cell, so you have to Vulkem from the shell to the plastic edge of the fan body or you'll have a leak. Also, you need to put a dab of Vulkem on each of the zillion screw heads or they will definitely leak, too. I've done that test twice and discovered the same answer both times.

Thanks for the tips. I thought the seal was just packing material. I read somewhere to not use the gasket but just the Vulkem. What would you recommend?

On the curved roof, the gasket helps reduce the stress on the plastic mounting flange of the fan. As a matter of fact, I cut strips out of the center piece of the gasket and lay a double layer along the outer edges (the edges parallel with the sides) to further reduce the bending stress. I don't cinch the screws down too tight on those two edges. You get the drift.
It does take a little more Vulkem, but I think it's an improved installation method.

Tundra - Is that a Fan-Tastic Vent? Is it made by the same folks that make Fantastic Fans? Don't forget to post a few photos of the swap out. My 75 has massive light fixtures at the vents and I am not sure how I would adapt something like that.

It is a Fan-Tastic Vent/fan 5000. Vintagetrailer.com has them "special" made in gray to match the AS. The stock ones are white on the top of the vent. I'll take some pics of the install might be a week or 2 with X-Mas next week. I think your fixtures have the lights and vent in the same fixture. I think you would lose the lights unless you could rigg up something.

Here's how I modified this flat Fantastic Fan so as to preserve the Hehr vent look.

Herb, is that an original metal vent lid glued on top of the Fantastic Fan lid?

I replaced all three of my vents a couple of years ago with fantastic vents. Absolutely the best thing I have ever done to the trailer. At first I was a little uneasy about taking tin snips to the inner and outer skins of the trailer inorder for the new vent to fit, but I got used ot it quickly. I will try to post some pics in the morning - my camera is at work I will bring it home in the morning.

Fantastic - Hehr
Yes , both the inside and outside are the original Hehr vent cover. The outside fits perfectly. The inside has to be cut in 3 place to accomodate the Fantastic cutoff switch, the crank track and a guide peg molded in the cover.

Hey Herb That looks Fantastic. But really, I think I need to do this and have read your article in the Vinatge Advantage a while back. I have to say it was hard to follow for me maybe since I did not have the parts in hand to look at.
Is it possible to show more step by step here and I also promise to go back and reread the article in VA.
Thanks, Gary
The Vintagetrailer gray plastic look good too..........but if we reuse the meal I can polish more!

Lid swap
Ref. post #8
Some where in the Forums is a short photo coverage on this use of a modified Fan lid to use the original aluminum one. Can someone guide me to it?

Glad this thread was just revived. I finished installing a new Fantastic fan yesterday and was just about to add the Hehr lid to the ever growing pile of original but replaced parts in the old barn when I saw this. I may have to rethink using the aluminum lid vs. the gray transparent lid I have for the Fantastic fan. I too am interested in how bjond made the remodel.
Helps?

The article was in a past Vintage Advantage, if you don't have a copy and are a VAC member, email Tim K for the article.
