I went out to take a picture of my vent and noticed a corner high. The glue is not bonding to the aluminum. I used Gorilla glue.

I am now more interested in how you are doing it.

You take the original and drill out the rivets, separating the two pieces, and then sandwich the plastic cover in between, either riveting or machine screws to put it back together. If I remember correctly, the inside piece has to be modded just a bit for the lifting hardware. Easy project.

My hope was to not poke any holes in the FF lid. Holes leak.

I looked at it more. My FF lid is not flat but rises ever so slight to a peak in the center.

The hinge is held on to the lid by 4 rivets. The lifting bracket is screwed into tabs molded into the lid. I think I may drill the 4 rivets out for the hinge, and fabricate two tabs for the bracket that I can mount to the inner panel of the original vent lid and mount the hinge directly to the original vent lid.

I got a couple more days in this holiday weekend to give it a try.

I got the process in motion today.

Got it done

It could have been done sooner ....but, I had to be sure the Vulkem, used to old the lid to the Fan, was cured. The only hic up was the attach screw hole on the hinge side. The lid is "almost" in the way of drilling and screwing tight.

How is the old lid connected to the FF lid? Are the clamps for glue?

the lid secret

I used the lid that came off my 56 Flying Cloud. The lid off the 56 Bubble is different....so different that it would not make a good tight fit on top of the Fan lid. With the lid off the Cloud (it is the Hehr type that is controlled with two screw type Hehr lifters) I just drilled off the inside center plate (six rivets). It then fit perfectly over the Fan lid....right down to the edges. The other type (that the Bubble came with) had the single , center, crank lifter. The sides of that lid are about 2/3rds the height of the other and would not cover the Fan lid. With the fit I had I was able to use Vulkem 635 as an adhesive which hardens up slowly to a great bonding glue. I don't foresee a loosening up as possible. I can always drill thru the lids and screw or rivet for added security.

Hi All. Bumping this older thread as we are looking for a Fantastic Vent for our '56 Bubble; decided this is the time to do it since we're going to have the inner skins off to strip and polish. Also doing all new wiring, etc. to her.

Until I came across this thread, we weren't aware that Vintage Trailer Supply had a Fantastic Vent for her. Does anyone have any updated thoughts on them for the vintage trailers?

We are also planning our air conditioning, so anyone with any ideas on this, we would greatly appreciate.

Thanks.

Deb

I ordered one from them a year or so ago for our 68' I had to cut the opening square for the fantastic fan. But not really a big deal. I got the flat bottom but should have got the curve one but you can't really tell. Looks great from the outside with the square flat vent cover. We love it !!! it does a great job of keeping the trailer cool while we our out. We opted for the temp control but no rain sensor as we are in the desert most of the time. I plan on getting one for the rear vent this spring.

Thank you, Jason, for sharing that. I didn't realize they offered an option -- flat or curved, I'm wondering if that's for all model AS's.

I'm off to check out VTS website.

Thanks again.

So to take this, perhaps to the point of ridiculousness...

I removed one of my vent assemblies from my '73 because the gasket underneath was disintegrating and causing leaks. I figured since it was off, I might follow the advice of many others and replace with a Fantastic Vent. But, I hate to replace perfectly good aluminum with fragile plastic.

So here is the ridiculous proposition: Has anyone out there taken the guts out of a fantastic vent (basically the fan and lift mechanism) and Frankensteined them into the original Airstream aluminum assembly?

Look at pbsailors thread. First she had to take a ride on a boat. I belive he reused the aluminum vet covers on his new fans. I hope this helps

Screws or Rivets

So are we all using screws or rivets to hold the FF on?
I assumed rivets.... but then Melody made it sound like it was screwed down.

Also, the gasket... need more info on gasket.
Does it fit on the inner portion, get caulked over, caulked up to, scrap it and use butyl... what?
I believe I got the "curved" design (which I don't think was available in '07 when this thread started), so would that mean the gasket is not really needed.

Melody, did you end up using the interior of the old Herh vent? or just scrap it.
Seems like you don't really need it, plus it adds extra weight to lift the lid.

I am wondering the same as REDSLED about the rivets or screws? I am replacing a non functioning, nest infested (eeeewwww!) FF with a new one. Are screws OK to use or would rivets be a better choice?

Rivets

I am opting for rivets (where I can).
I think I'm going to drill out the 1/8" rivets for the old lid, then redrill larger for new 5/32" 'A' rivets.... don't want to crack the plastic lid.

I'll use a lot of Trempro and 5/32" AD rivets for the housing.

I have removed my escape hatch, and will be making a patch, then riveting the new patch/FF into the trailer. So I don't really think I'll need the foam gasket.

Also, I think Butyl tape may be a good way to hold the lid, instead of trempro, because the new plastic FF lid comes to a point in the center, so I think Butyl around the edge will work good. However, I'm still using 5/32" 'A' for the lid to lid, because there are existing holes in the old lid, and I want it to look finished.

As I begin I'll post pics to this thread, and show my progress.
