Late 70's bathroom fan replacement

This is one of those round fans with a lid that pops up. The bearings in mine are squealing badly and it is running slow so I have bought a replacement.

I haven't been up on a ladder yet to check but I believe the old fan is screwed down to the roof as opposed to the usual rivets. Can anyone confirm this?

Also, the replacement fan did not come with a gasket. Can I just use vulkuem or is it better to use some of that butyl tape that you get in a kit for installing regular RV roof vents?

Thanks,
Christopher

Although I didn't get a reply I removed and installed the new fan last night. I'll give a basic derscription of the job for anyone who might have to do this themselves.

The old fan is fastened to the roof with six screws. It was sealed under and around the base flange with vulkum only.

The replacement fan has eight screw holes, only one of which lined up with an original screw hole. This required drilling new holes and finding a two more screws of roughly the same size.

I put a bead of vulkum on the bottom of the base then screwed it down part way, and then injected another bead under and around the perimeter, some of which squeezed out when all screws were evenly tightened.

Although the original fan didn't have any sealant gooped over the screw heads, possibly becuase they are hidden under the pop-up cap, but I sealed my screw heads just to be sure.

I haven't installed the new interior trim ring yet but I made a temporary power connection and the new fan runs much quieter than the old one. The new fan also has a little push button on/off switch, which I considered removing, but didn't. I'll just leave it "on" at the fan and use the wall switch as with the old fan.

Sounds like you did a good job. I only have two comments:
  • I believe that stainless steel screws are called for, to reduce potential corrosion.
  • Personally, I would have added new screw holes to the new fan's frame, rather than add more holes to the trailer, but both ways should work.

I think one of the additional screws I used was stainless. Not sure about the other one.

Drilling a new pattern of holes in the base of the new fan is an interesting idea, though you can't exactly butt the two fans up to each other to easily mark the holes. In short, you'd have to eyeball where the new holes should go, drill, and hope for they line up with the holes in the roof.

Thanks for the comments,
Christopher
