Installing Maxxfan's in a '79 Question

We just purchased two Maxxfan deluxe's for our 1979 31' Sovereign. My question is did you install it with butyl tape and sealant or just sealant. I know I will have to square off the corners of the original opening. I just was wondering what you guys have used and that it worked. The debate on this forum on sealant is making me start to twitch. I just want to use what works well and holds up the longest.

Sealant

I installed two Maxxair delux in a 1969 Sovereign this weekend and three in my other 1976 several months ago. Both I used Butal tape. The last one I also ran a bead of sealer around the inside so when placed it , the sealant made a nice bead. The other I ran a bead once installed. I think applying sealant before installing made a better looking job. Spend the time so you don’t have a leak so you can forget about it.

I’ve installed them in my ‘07 and my ‘14. Butyl tape and self leveling sealant.

I used Dicor because I could get it readily. It’s holding up just fine.

I used sikaflex 721 above and below the flange. No issues

I like butyl tape under the lip because it's removable. Urethane sealant is a heck of a strong glue, and semi-permanently gluing the frame to your roof is going to be a maintenance nightmare when you need to remove it to fix something down the road. Best to do butyl tape under the lip and urethane sealant of your choice around the edge to seal (sikaflex, dicor, whatever).

I totally agree with this. Wish I had done mine this way. I got in the zone of only polyurethane caulk is all you need.

Olympic Rivet or screws provided?

If the weather holds out on Friday I will be installing both MaxxFans. What did you use to fasten them down? Olympic Rivets or the screws provided?

We used stainless screws. Butyl tape under the lip of the frame, urethane sealant on the screw threads before screwing in, then urethane sealant around the perimeter and over top of each screw.
