I shouldn't be so lazy. Here's a typical bridge at a typical price. AC goes to two pins, DC comes out the other two (they're marked).

Thanks. Very helpful info. and advice. I can see I need to tune up my knowledge of electrical systems. For now I will plan to use the fan only when on the battery. As suggested I will be looking into a more "current" (sorry) power converter than the original Uni-volt, as well as possibly the bridge idea.

Ah, remember the good old days, when we had an electronics surplus house in Cleveland called "Western Salvage". They had bins and bins full of rectifiers and other discreet components. You could build anything out of parts from that place.
