At this point, I am not calling my fan Fantastic. When I bought the trailer, it worked perfect. With 3 trips, the motor gear stripped out. On the next trip or two, the motor wouldn't turn on. Cleaning the plunger switch didn't help. I ran juice to the fan motor and go it to run, so I know the motor is good. Oh yeah, the plastic trim inside is cracked...With this many problems, I haven't called Fantastic looking for free parts...I suppose the best route is buying a complete fan kit.

The MaxFan is a much better alternative to the Fantastic Vent. Has an integrated cover that allows for full use in the rain and also closes FLAT TO THE ROOF! If you even have an issue that requires unit replacement, 4 screws allow for the complete removal of the fan. A drop-in replacement takes about 10 minutes, as the roof bezel is mounted to the roof....not the fan mechanism. These are found on all of Airstream's Interstate coaches. Still don't know why they aren't standard on ALL Airstream products.

There are several very extensive threads that go into answering your exact question.
Silicone is not aluminum friendly and IF you ever have to reseal anything, you can not if silicone has been used previously. All traces of it must be removed prior to using any other product, especially........more silicone.
Polyurethanes (SikaFlex 221) and silane terminated polymers (SikaFlex 715) have repeatedly shown their bond strength and longevity in RV applications.
Look up the thread to get more detailed info.
