Astrodome question?

I need to replace the astradome on my 69' Overlander. Inland RV offers one that I assume is made from injection molded plastic, and Vintage Trailer Supply offers one made from Lexan. I would think that Lexan would by the longer lasting materiel. Anyone have any experience or insight to offer? The prices are in the same ballpark, so that isn't the issue.

Thanks in advance.

Jim

I bought one from InlandRV before VTS was selling their version.

I could be all wet, but it seems like there was a thread awhile back discussing VTS's offering being made out of fiberglass.

I'm sure you would be happy from one from either business.

Vintage Trailer Supply has ones made out of fiberglass. They are very high quality and match the originals perfectly. The astrodome is intended to be vent, not a skylight. As long as you realize that, you will not be disappointed.

Tom, you are not all wet... HERE is the thread. I'm sure you remembered it because the discussion got rather heated... very informative though for anyone trying to decide which one to buy.

Something Different

If you want one that lets in light, fits like a glove and are a handy person why don't you just make your own? I made mine out of two different sizes of aluminum angle, two sheets of clear lexan and a small foam gasket along with some pop rivets. I have been completely satisfied with its performance and durability. It lets in so much light, I changed the screen cover to a sun screen material to cut down on the glare. I can see the stars at night and watch the rain clouds build up during the day.

Here's a cross-section and how I did the corners.

You can also buy extruded Lexan sheet which has air tubes in the middle (looks like corrigated cardboard looking from the end). It is made for Green houses and give it some insulation value like the twin sheets mentioned above. You may be able to buy it thru your local glass supply house.
