Another Maxim Skylight Success

Kevin [Bambi_Bandit] did a great step-by-step post replacing OEM skylights with those made by Maxim in Texas. I was inspired. I just finished my replacement and, while I didn't do the outstanding job he did, I was successful. If you're interested the link is:

Nice, Greg. Think how the balloonists will enjoy the view of the top of your rig.

I've been pondering that for a couple years and finally installed one too. A quality product. Fit like a glove. Many thanks to those that shared experiences. Made the job easy. If you've been thinking about it, give it a try.

Recently we had the Maxim skylight installed on our Airstream by Lance of Top's Texas Vintage Trailers. The quality is much better than the cheap piece of plastic that the Airstream factory installed. The Airstream factory had overtightened every screw so of course the skylight cracked every place that the skylight was screwed onto the Airstream ... and then they smeared a big messy slop of sealant over each of the cracked locations on the skylight. Talk about a perfect recipe for leaks.

The Maxim skylight (and installation by Lance) is a much higher quality. Photo attached.

I would recommend that anyone that has the factory installed skylight perform a close examination of their skylight installation and give very serious thought to replacing it.

What great posts! Thank you. We have an Inland replacement skylight to replace ourselves. I like how the Maxim screws into the sides and not the top.
Question: is the Maxim a custom build? Or if I bought a 19x19 from Inland do I buy that from Maxim or do I need to give them measurements of that aluminum skylight frame?

Jimmy,
Call the folks at M. Tell them the AS you have and they will tell you what fits. There are lots of options for the three levels of lens, so talk it out with them. Yes, the M's are built to order.

Just went through the process of ordering Maxim skylights for my 2012 Int'l. David Thornton was very speedy in providing me with what I needed for replacing the two "plastic" skylights that came standard. They are only slightly heavier than Saran Wrap. I guess you could say they don't add to the weight of the trailer, but that's about it. Looking forward to seeing how they look. Ordered them in powder coated white to match the roof, and with bronze-clear-clear as I had seen a trailer with this combo and thought it looked really nice.

I really want to do this upgrade....but my "Saran Wrap" refuses to crack! I must have a crack to justify to DW!
May I ask the cost of a Maxim...ballpark?
Maybe a BFH would make a crack?

I saw a video demonstrating that a B*H is much more likely to bounce back from a Maxim and hit you in some part of you body.

If you have the same stock ones that I had, just go up on the roof and spit on them.

You definitely need them. It's a necessity not just a desire. Make that your mantra.

Gus,
A bit better than the old ones. You see a nice, clean, flat, white surface in the opening, fitting tightly to the surrounding curb. I'd post a pic, but the AS is up in storage for a few days. I'll try to remember to get pics when we bring her home to load up for the next trip.

A chance of fate (a nice word for a screw up) caused me to like ours even more than I would ahve. The normal ones that people (including me) order for Airstream replacements have two curved panes on top of one flat pane. They got the order wrong and made mine 3 curved panes like the build for homes. I like it much better. When you look up you see into this dome and to me the effect is much more pleasing. In addition, since our skylights both have shades that can be pulled across the bottom of the opening, I elected to have all 3 panes clear for maximum light. When you look up you see the sky as it actually is.

Received my Maxim skylights, climbed up on the roof and found both of my factory skylights were cracked more than half way around(they had been caulked over). They had started to leak but my Airstream has the aluminum ceiling and therefore I would not have discovered this had I not removed the factory skylights and see the water stains on the wooden frame.
It is so nice to be able to see the stars the new skylights are a great addition!

I have been installing these for two years now and am very happy with the consistent quality and customer service. The packing and shipping dept deserves a kudos too.
