Unhappy 1985 Excella shower vent fan

Has anyone ever replace the shower vent fan? We just bought a 1985 excella and the shower vent fan disentigrated -- literally imploded the plastic was so old! We are thinking about rigging a 12V fan unit. Got any advice? Thanks! Jules

Jules,

Although this is a bit of a late reply, I did replace my shower vent fan after the blades "disentagrated" after a noisey run. Out-of-Doors Mart in Greensboro NC sold me a new fan and while I was at it, I replaced the outside cover. Working from the outside, I removed the cover and replaced the fan (it is a one piece unit) that pressed on. I also picked up all the little pieces of the old fan blades. New cover (two screws as I recall) and it has worked like a charm for 2 years now.

Thanks Chris - On a scale of 1 - 10 how hard was it to replace the fan? Do you happen to remember what the cost was? Jules

Replacing the fan blade and cover was easy. Two screws on the outside removed the cover. THe fan just broke off. You have to pull off the "hub" part that is a push fit on the fan motor and push the new one on.

Easy. I think the whole repair was $20 or so. I just pulled my Excursion up to the AS and stood on it for the repair. You may want to use a ladder (pad the part that touches the AS).

Thanks again Chris, I've got some email working with Outofdoorsmart.com so we'll see how I come out with it. It doesn't sound too bad. Jules

I was thinking about the replacement of the outer cover....I recall the screws were accessable from the outside with the cover in the fully open position.

Give Tony a call at ODM. He is the service Manager and a nice guy. He can tell you exactly what needs to be done.

I emailed ODM abour 2 weeks ago, maybe your info is outdated:
Partsboy@outofdoorsmart.com 1-866-636-2267

I just broke the handle on the same fan and I was looking through their catalog:

vent VP-43 $59.99
vent fan blade VA0211-00 $4.69

I have a number of friends that have just replaced the fan with a fantastic fan. Motorized open and closed, but no rain sensor, or thermostat. You have to make a bigger hole, but you have a life time warranty . The power draw should be comparable.
