1969 Overlander replacing air conditioner with skylight
Hi,
I am looking to replace the air conditioner in my 1969 27ft Overlander with a skylight. I am not sure of the dimensions of the skylight needed. Any advice would be much appreciated, including any recommendations on skylight.
Thanks!

The original 69 AC required two very small holes in the roof and ceiling.
To install a "roof vent" you will need to cut open a hole for what ever vent you decide to use.
But typically, a 14" x 14" hole will be needed, but that also depends on what type of vent you purchase, such as square or round corners.

Thanks. That is interesting. I just received this reply from Airstream:
Hello, The A/C unit was an option back then. The hole should be a 14" by 14" opening.
If what you say is true, what would be the issues in cutting a hole? I would like to put as reasonably large skylight, not vent. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Airstream is DEAD WRONG.
The 1969 Airstream AC was an Armstrong TAC-110 model.
It used one hole for the fan shaft about 3/4 inch, and one oval hole about 2 x 3 inches, for the wire and the two copper lines that went to the inside two coils.
Therefore for the 1969 models, a 14 x 14 inch hole was NEVER cut.

The only issude on getting up on the roof to cut that 14 x 14 hole, would be.........................don't fall off.

Do you seem a problem with having a larger skylight than 14 x 14.
Don't fall off... NOTED!
Thanks.

I just did this job (but added an AC unit) a few years ago. Andy is correct.
There is a bunch of threads talking about how to frame it in. Some use wood, others metal. It not real hard to do, just take your time so you don't dent the roof, or fall off. It will be interesting to hear if you can find a larger skylight to use.

As a side note. I use a window a/c in my front window on our 66. No roof air. It works well for most hot weather camping and stays home the rest of the year. A few of us Overlander owners have opted for that.
Check EBAY for some great skylights too. Most are 14" wide x longer lengths.

I have a '69 sovereign, and have a "sky light" just in front of the AC unit. What should be in that spot, the previous owners had put a piece of plexiglass and lots of silicone.

Is it square are rectangle shaped? In my 1969 Ambassador there is a rectangle shaped roof vent with a metal cap. I believe there is a special name for the larger one. It has two gears that raise and lower it.

Thanks! It is rectangular and I figured it was a vent but wanted to see if there was something I didn't know about. I'm a newbie and don't really have a clue what I'm doing

We were all there. I will take a pic of mine and post it later. You can try to find a used one or have one made.

Here is an idea of that it looks like. It's in front of the AC.

If it's square, 14 x 14, then it's a "solar dome".
If it's rectangular, 14 x 26, then it's a "astrodome".
Both are available in milk white or solar gray and both have a thermal barrier.

This thread is a little old, but thought you might like the info. and we could use some advice. We have a 1969 International Overlander. We have original Armstrong TR2I-10 A/C unit mounted in bedroom area of roof. We are very luck to also have the installation instructions and owners maintenance guide. The A/c still works well, even in our Texas summers, it's noisy so we only use it when temp is over 85. The installation manual instructs a 14" x 14" cut through the roof for installation. My husband is a versed DIY said it does have a 14" x14" cut through the roof. Now that being said our TT is an International and most likely was intended to have A/C standard equipped. Now do you have any advice were to look for the drain line for condensation? Do not think was between the wall,as no line is found under the TT. Second we have rain water coming in between the skin traces along the seam lines inside wall over galley counter top sink area and drips around outside flange of galley roof vent and streams when press up on roof around outside edge of flange on front vent. All the roof seams and roof penetrations have been sealed. We thought perhaps wind blowing rain into A/C vents, filling drain pan then spilling over , running down to closest escape. Any advice taken with big Thank you.
