Wing Window Shatters Overnight

Has anyone experienced a wing window shattering overnight for no apparent reason?

We get up in the morning and find glass on the driveway under the window. Most of the glass is in front of the trailer, very little inside. The rock guard was closed. The window was the original 1969 tempered glass. The trailer just returned from a 900 mile trip. We do not think it was vandalism or a break in.

This is going to be a monster of a project. It is a 1969 Globetrotter...

Tempered glass is subject to spontaneous shattering. It is also possible there was something in the channel that pressed on or scratched the edge. Any edge damage on tempered glass makes it shatter.

Bummer. Hope you can replace it.

Thanks for the reply. I did not know that about chipping an edge might cause the glass to shatter.

I do know there has been aluminum end cap damage on that side through the years, dents and creases. Maybe that has distorted the window frame stressing the glass. The rock guard support is also attached to the window frame putting a little more stress on the glass.

I see Vintage Trailer Supply does carry a square corner plexiglass replacement wing window, and they carry a 1970 rounded corner replacement wing window also in glass. I would prefer glass due to durability and cost.

Photo attached, sorry for the wrong rotation.
