Windows Repair Project 1973 Land Yacht

I am restoring my vintage mid bath Landyacth and gathering parts and supplies but not been able to find everything i needed to do a refurbish on the windows. The 1973 has the double pane windows and over her 42 year lifetime the film inside has turned loose and needs to be taken part. I've not be able to find a disturber for the rubber seal that goes around the windows nor what is inside the window that separates it from the double pane. I would think in the forum someone has gone before me in the process and any information you have would be greatly appreciated.

Try Vintage Trailer. They may have parts. We replaced our rubber seal with Vulkum and it has worked so far. We made our windows single pane, so can't help with the "separator" part.

Tool for window repair using Vulkum

Thanks Minno for responding..When you said you used Vulkum did you have a tool that goes on the tip of the chalking gun? Not been able to find the attachment and i am sure its due to not knowing the name of the attachment. Here's the youtube video from a guy that is repairing his airstream using vulkum but not sure what the little attachment might be..

Nope, not sure what he's using either. We just cut the tip smallish and vulkemed around the edges, set it in place, and filled in with more vulkem.

I would think plain RTV would be a better glue than just about anything you can use. The problem is holding the gap. I don't like the butyl shim because that is what failed in the first place.

VTS at on time carried a plastic syringe that permitted a pretty fine application for the
Valcum . They may be cleaned up and reused.

On my '73, the large windows had an inner pane that was plastic and removable. On this photo, you can see that the foam seal has deteriorated around the edges. It also looks like they have used some sort of film on the inside, hence the purple color:

IMHO, there is not all that much insulating value in the second pane, so you can just remove them. there will be some small screws on the sides that you just need to remove and then the inner pane comes out. The outer pane is held in with a permanent rubber gasket, there have been threads here on replacing that gasket, but it generally involves splitting the frame so everything can come out and then getting it all back together.

You can see where they split the frame in this photo:

The vista views or stack windows (the narrow skinny ones) are mostly held in the same way. The outer frame is riveted to the skin and the inner window is held in with some sort of bedding compound. On mine it was vulkem which was fairly easy to clean up once the glass was out. The inner window was held in with a kind of split trim ring that wedged it against the inner frame. You have to take the inner trim off first then it will make much more sense. Generally they have some sort of half silvered film that breaks down over time and looks like what you have here:

Take a looksee here around post 12 and you can see what I went through with windows this year. http://www.airforums.com/forums/f46/...or-127619.html

aquinob, Thanks so much for responding to my post. The information you provided is right on the money perfect. Managed to work some on my windows this weekend between pastoring my church and taking care of the family. I managed to get half my windows cleaned and new wreathing striping on. Next is the vista view windows which doesn't look to be as easy.. Do the vista view windows only come out by removing them from the outside of the AS? Which would be drilling out the rivets?

Something must have happened to your links. I cant access the photos as I did before. As long as they are static, they should stay around. I use google picasa for hosting my photos, have never had an issue. If you put them in your gallery, you should be able to link back to them.

Depends. I have one window on my '73 overlander that would have to be drilled out from the outside. The other stack window (similar to vista view) the inner and outer panes were removable from the inside. You can try and see if they have that big "C" ring that holds the panes in. That would probably be the key.

I looked at this last night and I didn't see a C ring but it looks like it should slide out.. Do you have a pic of what one should look like?

Here is a picture of my recent stack window removal, with the ring on the way out . . .

The rest of it came out just fine.

Wonderful.... After cleaning a tube of clear silicone off I could see the edge of the snap ring. Thanks so much for the information so glad for the airstream community and gleaming knowledge from the ones that have gone before.

What about the side windows in the front? Do they have a snap ring on will it need to be drilled?
