Window curiosity
Hi,
Just curious (inquiring minds want to know) - do any of you have the louvered type windows in your airstreams?..we have the '64 Safari which has the jalousie types on both sides of the trailer..they are different looking for sure.

Codybear, why does it not surprise me that you have the inquiring mind?
I have the jalousie windows stacked to the right of the door on my 1960 Tradewind. Cool, aren't they! They remind me of the windows I grew up with in south Florida during the late '50s and '60s. Jalousies were so popular then, but they leaked terribly during severe storm winds and squalls.

I remember those tin jalousies well. We had them across the entire front porch of the house that I grew up in in the 50's and 60's at 251 SW 11 Street, Miami 30, Fla.

Jalousies
Jalousies had a limited run of popularity here in Arkansas in the 50s and 60s. I remember a floor to ceiling one at a local gas station that my Explorer troop leader owned. Great in the spring and fall, but what a pneumonia hole in the winter. It gets cold here sometimes.
The first Airstream I was ever in had a jalousie window in the door. Even though, given the leaking problem, I wouldn’t want one; it was very cool.

The jalousie windows were a standard curb-side feature ahead of the door on the longer Airstream coaches through the '64 model year. I am not certain of the date Airstream began this feature, but believe that it was sometime in the early 1950s.
Yours is the second '64 coach that I have heard of that also has street-side jalousies. A long-time member of WBCCI and the Free Wheelers owned a '64 Sovereign of the Road that she and her husband purchased new that was special ordered with several of the jalousie windows -- it certainly made for a distinctive appearance at the International Rallys.

Gee SuEllyn! Has the neighborhood changed any? It looks like a semi truck going by.
(from Google Maps)
Zones? Those were the days. I grew up in San Antonio 9, Tex. I even enjoyed finding a used Delta drill press in the early 80s from Pittsburgh 5, Penna. States didn't have the 2 letter abbreviations either.

That's I-95 in the photo about a block from where I grew up. Of course, 11th Street went through then because I-95 wasn't there yet.

One thing we've always had w/the jalousie windows - good tight seal when windeows were fully closed. no leaks..in fact, sometimes, the panes seal closed so well, it takes some effort to open them..the crank works well. We get a good cross draft through the dining area!

Some PO removed the oval plexiglass windows in our '48 and added two square jalousies on each end. We had thought they were special order until we removed the skins and found small cuts from the original oval along with left over seam sealer. We're putting the jalousies back in as it lets in more air and looks way cool.

We have the jalousie window in front of the door on the 64 Tradwind that we just bought. My question is, how do you replace the glass panes in those. Ours looks like someone has tried to seal the panes shut with something. I don't know what it is, but it won't come off. I want to save the window and just replace the panes.

California Built
I was told this was an option for the CA built trailers. Don't know for sure...

This is from the internet and was supposed to be a 1964 Sovereign as well.
P.S. This is my first attempt to post a pic (successfully)
My 1964 Bambi II has a louvered window in the door

Sounds like some kind of sealant was used to stop leaks or prevent lose of the glass segments. Have you tried any solvents like Permatex Gasket Remover? We found it to work really well at removing silicone...not without some virgorous scraping, but it does help soften it up. If all else fails, you can always break the glass out (easy to replace) and get all the goo out of the frames then put new glass in...

Thanks Shari
Yes, we had planned on just replacing the glass. We just can't seem to buy a trailer that doesn't need glass work done. Anyway, how do you get the glass out of those windows? Here is what we have now.

Do the windows open (pivot) or are the "glued" shut? If they "open" and the panels aren't glued together, they should just slide up and out after loosening the side gaskets from the frame. Although, from your pic it looks like they are glued shut...
Since you are planning on replacing the glass, I would just break it out. Then get the goo out of the frame with whatever means necessary and put new glass in. Try using a straight edged razor blade or putty knife with the gasket remover for starters to scrape out the frame...if they were gluded shut or in place with epoxy or something similar, it may not work. But once the glass is removed you should be able to clean-up the frames somehow...the metal part appears to be in good shape.

The windows open. Whatever they used didn't hold up well. Just made a mess. I will try to see if I can figure out how to loosen the side gaskets.
Thanks
Debbie
