Where can you purchase glass for a '68 Caravel

Hey Folks,

Well after admiring Airstream' for years I finally purchased one. A beautiful 68 Caravel. Of course it needs it's share of work, a new floor,countertop, and kitchen and front windows.

Are the any places to purchase the replacement glass? I found one website but it sure seemed expensive.

Hopefully the picture of the kitchen window is attached.

You don't really have any other options on curved glass unless you go with Lexan. Flat tempered glass for front and rear can be made by an auto glass shop. At least you came on the scene when replacement curved glass is actually available! Up until a year ago there wasn't any.

Peter, I ordered all the curved windows from Vintage Trailer Supply except for the front and rear flat tempered glass which I had made locally from an auto glass replacement center. Even though it was expensive the difference between it and lexan are enormous....I bet if you try lexan you won't be happy. Try to send a pm to NIKKI and see if any of the glass is still left from that trailer. The shell was destroyed in the Katrina hurricane that hit Mississippi. That may be your best bet. Ed

Where can I find the specs for the size and most importantly the
thickness for the front window? I imagine that when ordering the glass tVintage Trailer Supply will know the specs.

It looks like a few of the clips that slide on the bottom of the glass are missing, anyplace sell them?

I think there are only three sizes in the curved Peter. Just take a rough measurement and you will have it.

Peter, If you go to VintageTrailerSupply.com you can find all the glass sizes under the replacent glass Tab for 66',67',68', model trailers. Do yourself a (money saving) favor and get the two (front and rear) flat heat tempered glass windows from a local glass shop. (Get a quote first and compare it to the price from VTS). Tell them you want heat tempered 1/8" thick sanded edge glass with rounded corners on the two bottom corners of both windows. I bought my two flat ones that way and the combined price for them was slightly less than I would have paid for just one from VTS. It is the same glass just not from the same vendor and you don't have to pay shipping. The window sizes are 39" x 20.5", 29" x 20.5", and 17.5" x 20.5" for the curved glass, and 39" x 20.5" for the two flat ones all in 1/8" thick. Remember VTS is the only place to get replacement curved glass. The only other way to obtain curved glass is to buy original Corning chemically tempered glass from someone parting out a 66'.67',68', trailer, and it is very expensive if you can find it, and not as good as heat tempered! It is a very good quality product and you are very fortunate to have just gotten a 68' as up until a year ago no one had manufactured the curved glass for 40 years. Ed

Okay, so now I've got the purchasing of the glass set up.

Now I noticed that the rear bathroom glass has a thin silver metal frame on it.

Do I need to have that on the front and kitchen glass also?

I am missing the metal clips that adhere to the glass and keep it fastened.
Does anyone sell them? Maybe Vintage Trailer Supply?

Any pointers on getting the glass in the upper hinge?

Peter, Check out the thread "Cursed Front Window" in this sub forum. you will need to remove the inside clamp part of the frame from the hinge. Install bedding tape on top edge of window and re-install. The metal window frame is not original to the 66',67',68', windows. It was probably installed by a previous owner. VTS is supposed to carry the correct clips for the windows in stock this spring. Inland has clips but they are designed for the lexan windows they sell that have aluminum frames, and do not fit on the frameless glass correctly. Check out VTS website under tab for windows and look for the installation instructions posted there. You should have Type #3 window frames. Ed
