Wanted: 88 Excella 30" Side Window

Wanted: 30" Side Window glass and sash for 88 Excella. I have no idea how it happened but I was packing up for an outing this weekend and noticed the one of my windows was completely shattered, but still in the sash. I'm sick about it.

Same thing happened to me. Beautiful 70 degree day with no wind. I'm working in the driveway and hear a loud "pop!" Couldn't figure out what it was until I looked at the curbside front (curved) window of the AS and it's shattered into a million pieces. Gut wrenching.

Unhappy

I attached a photo. Although it is shattered into a million pieces, it is not obvious in daylight with interior darkened. I didn't notice until it was night and interior lights were on and I was doing a walk around outside. I don't know how/when it happened.

I had my front center window do the same thing, probably from a stone chip. I had a glass shop reglass the frame with tempered glass for about $150. If that window is flat, that might be your best bet.

The glass is curved. IF I can find a replacement it will likely be $500+

I think I still have my emergency exit window from my 2012 27FB Flying Cloud. If you think it will fit I’d be glad to talk with you about it....

SteveSueMac, thanks for the offer. It looks like you might have a 371380-01 30” x 30”, opening egress window and my window is a 30 5/8" X 22 1/4" window though I haven't been able to find an '88 parts book so I don't have a number for it. But I don't think it will fit without some serious modifications.

hi john,
any competent commercial glass shop in your area should be able to replace the glass. i think what you had was a flaw in a piece of tempered glass.

Tempered glass is highly sensitive to scratches or damage on the edges. When you replace the glass, check the frame carefully for anthung that might scratch it press on the very edge of the glass, and make sure it’s smooth and even. Space the glass away from the frame metal when you install it so there is no pressure on the edge.

Tempered glass is made by heating the glass after it has been cut, then cooling it rapidly. The tension set up between the flat surfaces and the interior of the glass sheet makes it both very strong, and causes it to shatter in small pieces if it does break.

Damage on the thin edge easily upsets the tension that makes it strong and can cause spontaneous seeming shattering. The edge is the vulnerability in tempered glass. One smallish edge scratch, or ding, and it quickly explodes into small shards. It’s interesting material. The cracks propagate at the speed of sound in the material. Took years to figure that out in reality, although theory had it right. It’s almost as fast as an explosive...just happens only inside the sheet of glass.

I had a home tempered glass patio door shatter spontaneously one time. Heard a “whump” noise and had glass all over the floor. Nothing hit it. The inside pane just shattered. It took several blows from a big hammer to break the outer pane to get it broken so I could easily clean it all up. It was too heavy to try to carry it intact. Big door.

Search the forums classified section. Craigslist too. They show up from time to time.
I had some of those but sold them all quickly. I do have a 80s fixed window, frame and trim available but it would be nearly the same price as a new replacement of what you need because of shipping such a big heavy piece.

Thanks all for the help. I did order new one last Friday. part number for the replacement “glass and sash” is 680169 and is $506.44 plus shipping. OODM haD in stock, though not in their catalog.

I taped over the shattered glass with some black gorilla tape for Memorial weekend camp-out on the beach. It looked so good I doubt anyone one even noticed it.

Gorilla Tape is like “The Force”. It has a light side, a dark side, and can hold the universe together...

I was curious to see if you still have that 30" egress window? If so, would you be willing to send me a photo of it. I have a 2018 A/S Classic and need the egress window.
